Understanding Operability Charts
Updated over 8 months ago

Overview

Feasibility of planned activities is a key feature of ODST. ODST empowers users to assess operational feasibility based on forecasted weather conditions or predicted vessel motions. This article delves into the interpretation of operational feasibility using the color-coded visual representation presented by the tool.

Utilization and Time

The color-coded bars represent operational utilization as a function of time. Users can navigate through different time frames to assess how operational feasibility changes over the course of an offshore campaign and associated activities.

The operability charts should be read in conjunction with the weather forecast confidence factor. Extra caution should be made for activity sequences defined by high utilization and poor weather confidence factor.

Understanding the Color Code:

It is important to note that activity utilization in this context is a measure calculated from the user defined operational criteria and the forecasted/predicted conditions. As the user defined operational criteria in most cases will have inherent safety margins (from numerical simulations), 100% utilization in the operability charts should not be read as an absolute measure of operational utilization.

It is the responsibility of the user to understand the basis for the user defined operational criteria.

Green: 0% to 90% Utilization

  • Meaning: Activities represented in green are well within the forecasted or predicted conditions, with utilization ranging from 0% to 90%. This zone indicates a comfortable operational margin, signaling that the planned activity is well-matched with the anticipated environmental factors.

  • Recommendation: Green signifies a high likelihood of successful execution. Users can proceed with confidence, considering the operational conditions favorable for the activity.

Yellow: 90% to 100% Utilization

  • Meaning: Yellow bars indicate that the activity criteria are approaching the upper limits of the forecasted or predicted conditions, with utilization ranging from 90% to 100%. This zone suggests a cautious approach, highlighting a nearing threshold for optimal operational conditions.

  • Recommendation: Exercise caution and consider potential adjustments to the plan. While feasible, activities in the yellow zone may benefit from a closer examination of external factors that could impact execution.

Red: 100% Utilization or Above

  • Meaning: Activities represented in red are at or above 100% utilization, surpassing the forecasted or predicted conditions. This zone signals that the planned activity may encounter challenges based on the current forecast.

  • Recommendation: Red indicates a critical threshold. Users should carefully assess the potential risks associated with proceeding as planned. Consider alternative strategies or modifications to mitigate adverse effects.
