Understanding Data Standards & Service Provider Networks Basics

Updated this week

Data Standards and Service Provider Networks help organizations collect, share, and report on data more consistently. Together, they provide a flexible framework that supports clearer reporting, stronger collaboration, and more confidence in the results you share with funders and partners.

At the center of this framework are Data Standards. A Data Standard defines a shared set of fields or forms that standardize how data is collected and structured. Organizations can use Data Standards on their own to simplify internal reporting, or they can share them across organizations to support coordinated, network-wide reporting.

Service Provider Networks build on this foundation by creating a space where organizations can collaborate. Networks allow a lead organization to share Data Standards with partner organizations, making it easier to align data collection and report on collective outcomes. Participation in a Network is optional—Data Standards are valuable whether you are collaborating across organizations or working within a single Apricot site.

This approach supports a wide range of reporting needs. By standardizing data at the point of collection, organizations spend less time reconciling differences later and more time using insights to improve programs and demonstrate impact. Data Standards also connect directly to Impact Hub, where standardized data can be explored through dashboards and reports.

Data Standards and Networks are designed to give organizations control and flexibility. You choose which standards to create, adopt, map, share, or update. Nothing is shared automatically, and organizations remain in charge of how their data is used.

The articles below explain the core concepts behind Data Standards and Networks and guide you through creating, sharing, and managing them based on your role and goals.
