What is the Impact Hub Builder workspace?

Updated this week

The Builder workspace is where Impact Hub Authors design and configure reports. It provides a set of panels that work together to help you build visuals, apply filters, and control how data is displayed in dashboards.

Builder uses Amazon QuickSight’s embedded analysis experience, giving you flexible tools to explore and present data from your Impact Hub datasets.

You must have Author or Author Pro access to use the Builder workspace.

Before you begin

Keep the following in mind when working in Builder:

  • Only Authors and Author Pro users can access the Builder workspace.

  • Reports must include at least one dataset before you can begin building visuals.

  • New or updated Apricot data syncs into Impact Hub datasets approximately every two hours after initial dataset creation.

Understand the main areas of the Builder workspace

When you open a report in Builder, the workspace is divided into several panels. Each panel supports a specific part of the report-building process.

Visual canvas

The visual canvas is the main area where you design and arrange report visuals.

From the canvas, you can:

  • Add charts, tables, KPIs, and other visual types

  • Drag fields directly into visuals

  • Resize, reorder, or delete visuals

  • Add titles and descriptions to improve clarity

Fields list

The fields list, located on the left side of the workspace, contains all available fields from the dataset or datasets used in the report.

This panel includes:

  • Form fields from Apricot

  • Metadata fields (such as DOCUMENT_ID or PARENT_ID) used for grouping and counting

From the fields list, you can:

  • Search for fields by name

  • Drag fields into visuals, filters, or calculations

  • Create and manage calculated fields

Visual configuration pane

The visual configuration pane appears when a visual is selected. It controls how data is represented within that visual.

From this pane, you can configure:

  • Which fields are used (for example, x-axis, y-axis, values, or groups)

  • Aggregation methods and sort order

  • Formatting options such as labels, legends, and display settings

Filter panel

The filter panel controls which data appears in your report or in individual visuals.

Using the filter panel, you can:

  • Create filters on any available field

  • Choose filter types such as dropdowns, date ranges, or multi-select lists

  • Apply filters to a single visual, multiple visuals, or the entire analysis

Properties panel

The properties panel lets you control the appearance, layout, and behavior of the selected visual. These settings help ensure dashboards are readable, accessible, and consistent.

From the properties panel, you can:

  • Add or edit titles and subtitles

  • Customize styling such as background color, borders, and padding

  • Show or hide axes, labels, and reference lines

  • Enable data labels for clarity

  • Add alt text to support accessibility requirements

  • Configure interactions, including how visuals respond to user selections

Tips for designing reports in Builder

When designing reports in the Builder workspace, consider these best practices:

  • Confirm your dataset selection before adding visuals.

  • Add visuals incrementally and validate results as you go.

  • Use clear naming conventions for visuals and calculated fields.

  • Apply filters thoughtfully to avoid conflicting interactions.

  • Review layout and formatting to ensure dashboards are easy to read and interpret.
