What are Casper test rules?

What you can and can't do during your Casper test

Updated over 2 weeks ago

This guide outlines what is required and what is allowed during your Casper test. Follow these rules carefully to avoid interruptions or disqualification.

System & device requirements

  • You must use a computer (desktop or laptop). Phones, tablets, iPads, Chromebooks, or Linux systems are not supported.

  • Use a Windows or macOS computer

    • Note: Hybrid devices like Microsoft Surface are allowed but might have technical issues. More information is available here.

  • Use only Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox, fully updated. Other browsers aren’t supported and can cause issues.

  • Internet must meet minimum speeds (about 1.5 Mbps download and 2 Mbps upload), but higher speeds are better. You can test your internet speed through your Acuity Insights account.

  • A working webcam and microphone (built‑in or external) are required so you can be monitored and verified during the test.

Rules during the test

  • Take the test alone. No one can assist you.

  • Webcam and mic must stay on the entire time. Your face should be visible (except during scheduled breaks).

  • Type your answers. Speech-to-text or dictation tools are not allowed, unless pre-approved accommodations are in place.

  • Disable browser extensions, VPNs, and firewalls before starting your test.

  • No need to show your ID at the start of the test.

Breaks

There are scheduled breaks during Casper:

  • A 10‑minute optional break halfway through the test after the video questions.

  • A second optional 5‑minute break after the first four written questions (note: some test types, like Casper for Australian Teacher’s Education, does not include this second break).

  • You can step away during breaks, but make sure to return on time.

Devices and distractions

  • Do not use your phone. Turn off notifications or disconnect your phone from your computer.

  • Remove smartwatches or any wearable tech before starting.

What materials you can use

During the test, you are allowed to use:

  • Face masks: If local regulations require a mask, that’s okay. But you’ll need to briefly remove it at the start and midpoint of your test for ID photos, only if safe to do so. If not, contact Acuity Insights for help.

  • Food & drinks: You can eat or drink, but stay focused on the test.

  • Headphones: You may use corded headphones to listen to videos or block distractions. Wireless headphones may work, but test them first and ensure they’re fully charged.

  • External keyboards: You can connect an external keyboard to your laptop. Wireless keyboards are fine, but test them before the test starts.

  • Monitors: A second monitor is allowed. Just make sure your face is always visible to the webcam.

  • Note-taking: You can use blank sheets of paper, pen/pencil, and a hardcopy dictionary. Pre-written notes or grammar/translation tools are not allowed.
