Test Language (Canadian Programs)

Completing Casper in English or French for Canadian programs

Updated over a week ago

Applicants must complete Casper in the language of the program to which they are applying. Some Canadian programs are bilingual and will accept a score from either an English or French Casper test, but not both. Bilingual programs will indicate this in their entries on our Dates and Fees page.

When you reserve your first Canadian Casper test in an admissions cycle, you will be asked to indicate your Bilingual Program Distribution Language. Once selected, all bilingual programs may only receive a score from an appropriate Casper test taken in the selected language.

Please note that:

  • This selection is required by all applicants taking a Canadian Casper test even if you are not applying to any bilingual programs.

  • You cannot take a Casper test in both English and French, and then decide your Bilingual Program Distribution Language. You must choose your preferred language when reserving your first Canadian Casper test of the admissions cycle (regardless of test type).

  • You cannot change your selection after reserving your Casper test.

  • Your selection only affects bilingual programs that you wish to add to your distribution lists, if any. It does not impact reserving a Casper test for and distributing your score to any program that only accepts a single language.

  • Your selection applies to the entire admissions cycle, not just the test you are reserving. If you need to take the Casper test again in a future admissions cycle, you will be asked to choose your preferred language for bilingual programs again.

Example 1

An applicant is applying to the Université de Sherbrooke and McMaster University for undergraduate medicine. Based on the language requirements of these programs, the applicant must complete two Casper tests: one in French, one in English.

Sherbrooke only accepts a score from a French Casper test, so the applicant must complete the associated test (CSP-20206F-Sciences de la santé).

McMaster only accepts a score from an English Casper test, so the applicant must additionally complete the associated test (CSP-10201-Canadian Professional Health Sciences).

Example 2

An applicant is applying to the Université de Montréal and McGill University for Dentistry.

Both of these programs accept a score from either an English OR French Casper test, but not both. This means the applicant can only complete Casper once in their Bilingual Program Distribution Language.

Based on their selection, they will complete either an English Casper test (CSP-10201-Canadian Professional Health Sciences) or a French Casper test (CSP-20206F-Sciences de la santé) as part of their application.

You will be asked to choose your Bilingual Program Distribution Language when registering for your first Canadian Casper test of the current admissions cycle. For the rest of the cycle, you will only be able to send these bilingual programs the score from the Casper test that matches your selected language.

Please make your selection carefully, as this cannot be changed for the remainder of the admissions cycle.

If you are unable to select a school during the reservation process or when adding additional programs to your distribution list (i.e., it appears as greyed out), this means that your Bilingual Program Distribution Language does not match the language of the test. Instead you will need to book the appropriate Casper test type in your previously selected distribution language or add the program to the corresponding distribution list of a previously reserved Casper test from the current admissions cycle.

Important Update:

While the University of Ottawa Medicine program accepts English or French tests (but not both), it is no longer subject to the rules of the language sent to all bilingual programs.

Applicants applying to University of Ottawa Medicine must complete Casper in the language of instruction selected when submitting their application to University of Ottawa, or else their application will be disqualified.

Applicants cannot send both languages to this program during a single admissions cycle. The program will accept either English or French, not both.

The University of Ottawa Medicine program can now be added to your French or English distribution list, regardless of your Bilingual Program Distribution Language.
