Purpose: To test for hearing loss and review noise management control. Occupational hearing loss happens gradually over time; workers often fail to notice changes in their hearing ability until a relatively significant change occurs. By comparing audiometric tests from year to year, early changes can be detected, and appropriate protective measures implemented to prevent further damage.

Who can complete: registered or enrolled nurse, doctor or trained allied health professional (occupational therapist, exercise physiologist, physiotherapist).

Time to complete: 5 – 15 minutes

Equipment: Quiet room or sound booth, daily calibrated Audiometry machine, headphones, percentage hearing loss calculator1.

Test for frequencies above 1000Hz (up to 8000Hz), and then retest 1000Hz. On the retest, the levels at 1000Hz should be within +/- 5dB. If not, the test should be repeated until an agreement can be obtained. Finally, test for the frequency of 500Hz.

An audiograph is automatically generated in our Carelever forms when values are added, however if an assessment is being completed on paperwork, an Audiograph will need to be attached and sent through to KINNECT along with all assessment results.”

Percentage Hearing Loss (PHL%) is calculated automatically in KINNECT’s Carelever Forms as values are added, however can be calculated using a PHL calculator on your computer’s desktop if being completed on paperwork. Make sure you include 6000Hz and 8000Hz in your Percentage Hearing Loss calculations.

The standards applied for audiometry:

  • Australian and New Zealand Occupational Noise Management Standard (AS/NZS 1269.4)

*The OSHA Hearing Standard is applied specifically when the company we are performing the audiometry for has applied the OSHA hearing standard to their Occupational Safety and Health Administration policy. This standard is predominantly applied in the US and in some international companies. The booking team will advice if OSHA is the required standard for testing. All audiometry testing at KINNECT is defaulted to the Australian Standard unless otherwise advised.
