What is the difference between Empty, Open, and Assigned Shift?

Empty Shift, Open Shift, Assigned Shift

Updated over 11 months ago

On the calendar view, an admin can add Empty, Open, or Assigned shifts. The main difference is the visibility and confirmation process.

1. Visibility

  • Empty Shift

A shift in the schedule that has no team member assigned to it and has not yet been offered to any team members for claims. It is a private shift. Only admins can assign the empty shift. It is only visible to staff when assigned and published.

  • Open Shift

A shift in the schedule that has not yet been assigned to a team member but is available for acceptance and work by all or a select group of team members. It is a public shift. It means it is visible to everyone to apply.

  • Assigned shift

An assigned shift refers to a specific type of work shift that an employer designates and assigns to particular individuals, rather than making it available to everyone. In contrast to an open shift, which is accessible for any eligible employee to claim, an assigned shift is specifically chosen for and offered to certain individuals and only visible to those persons.

2. Confirmation

  • Empty Shift

When the admin assigns as well as publishes the empty shift, the staff can work on that shift. The procedure of confirmation will be the same as that of an assigned shift.

  • Open Shift

It requires admin approval. When a staff applies, the admin can approve or reject.

  • Assigned shift

It does not require admin approval. Once the staff confirms the shift, its status will change to “Confirmed”. It means the person is ready to work on the shift.
