A multi-placement ad holds up to three creatives at different aspect ratios and lets Meta serve the best-fitting one for each placement — Feed, Stories, Reels — instead of you building and managing a separate ad per placement. It's the tidy way to get full placement coverage out of one ad.

What goes in one

Up to three creatives, and the combination that covers the most ground is one of each shape:

  • 1:1 (square) — Feed

  • 9:16 (vertical) — Stories and Reels

  • 1.91:1 (horizontal) — right-hand column and some Audience Network spots

You don't have to fill all three — but every placement you target should have a creative it can use, which is exactly what the placement rule error further down is about.

Adding creatives

In the Creative Assets column, click the + to pull images or videos in from the Asset Library. Three is the ceiling per ad.

Grouping into a multi-placement ad

In the Bulk Add wizard, at Select creative assets:

  1. Select the assets you want together.

  2. Click Group into multi-placement.

  3. They collapse into one ad card carrying a Multi placement label.

To pull them apart again, select the grouped ad and ungroup it.

When you hit a "placement rule error"

This is the one that brings people to support, so let us be plain about what it means: Meta is refusing the group because a placement you're targeting has no creative it can legally show there. Meta enforces rules per placement — aspect ratios it will and won't accept, and formats certain placements won't run at all — and if the group can't satisfy one of them, the whole ad errors rather than quietly dropping that placement.

In practice it's almost always one of these:

  • A ratio gap. You're targeting a placement that needs, say, a 9:16 and there's no vertical asset in the group. Add the missing shape.

  • A format a placement won't take. Some placements won't run a particular video spec, or want motion where you've given them a static. Swap in something that fits, or drop that placement from the ad set.

  • A combination Meta won't reconcile. Occasionally each asset is fine on its own but the placement selection asks for a mix Meta won't serve together.

The fix is the same shape every time: read the error in Issue Info on the Ad Details panel (View details on the task), see which placement it's naming, and either add a creative that satisfies it or narrow the placements. Then relaunch — you don't need to rebuild the whole task.

Our honest advice: get the 1:1 / 9:16 / 1.91:1 trio into every group by habit and you'll almost never see this. It's nearly always a missing shape.

If you get one you can't decode, send us the ad name and the placements you'd set, and we'll tell you which creative it's missing.
