Smart Lock Integration: Setup, Access Codes, and Supported Devices

How locks connect, how access codes are generated and when they activate, and the Lock Preferences settings behind the most common question, why a guest cannot get in yet.

How the lock integration works

Besty connects to smart locks through Seam, an integration layer that covers the large majority of lock manufacturers. Because Seam sits in the middle, device compatibility follows Seam's supported device list rather than a list Besty maintains. If you are checking whether a specific model works, that is where to look.

The integration usually has to be switched on for your account by Besty before you can connect anything, so if the option is missing, ask rather than assuming your locks are unsupported.

Connecting your locks

Under Locks, the Manage Locks tab holds an embedded integration console with + Connect New Account, which opens your lock provider's own sign-in.

That console looks different from the rest of Besty, with its own styling and its own language selector. That is expected. It is a third-party embed, not a broken page.

You can connect more than one lock brand to the same account at once, which matters for portfolios assembled over time. Once connected, Organize Property Listings is where individual locks get mapped to individual listings. A lock that is connected but not mapped will not do anything useful, and the Locks card will not appear in that property's guest conversations.

Access codes, and when they actually work

By default Besty generates a guest code from the last four digits of the guest's phone number, time-limited to their stay.

Codes activate on an offset relative to check-in, not at the moment of booking. That is the answer to "my guest is standing at the door and the code does not work". The code exists, but it is not live yet.

Lock Preferences, showing code activation offsets relative to check-in and check-out

The Lock Preferences tab controls it, under Lock Code Duration: "Control when guest codes become active and expire relative to check-in and check-out." Check-in can be At check-in or an Offset of a set amount before it, and check-out likewise, either at check-out or an offset after it.

If early arrivals are a regular complaint, widening the check-in offset is the fix. If guests are locked out while loading the car after checkout, widen the other end.

When codes are sent

Separately from when a code becomes active, there is the question of when the guest is told it. Codes are typically delivered at midday on the check-in day, and only after the rental agreement has been signed.

So a guest who has not signed will not receive a code, however correctly the lock is configured. If a code has not arrived, check in this order: has the guest signed, is the PMS connection healthy, is the lock mapped to the listing, and does a code exist in the lock system at all.

Other Lock Preferences

Notification Preferences covers low battery, connection issues and noise threshold exceeded. A word of caution on connection issues: on a portfolio with many locks that setting is noisy, and it is a judgement call rather than an obvious default.

Auto Lock re-locks a door a set number of minutes after it has been unlocked. Reporting sends a daily summary of lock activity at a time you choose.

Monitoring your locks

The Analytics tab summarises the whole estate as three donuts: lock status as locked, unlocked or unknown, connectivity as online, offline or unknown, and battery as good, low, critical or unknown. The same three dimensions repeat as filter chips over a table listing each lock with its status, connectivity and battery, shown as a percentage with a qualitative label such as "28% (low)".

Working the battery filter before a busy weekend is a great deal cheaper than a lockout call during one.

Lock status also reaches the Inbox: where a lock is mapped, the guest sidebar carries a Locks card showing connection state, battery and whether the door is locked, so whoever is handling the conversation can see it without leaving the thread.
