We see students creating books on every possibly topic, from their curriculum content and also on their personal interests, so it is important that Book Creator offers a wide breadth of images to keep students engaged in creating their best work.

Book Creator provides a built-in image search that returns over 2 million high quality and copyright free images from Pixabay. All images on Pixabay are reviewed by humans to be safe for all ages.

However Pixabay has few images for historic or contemporary people, events or brands and if a teacher or student doesn't find the right image for their project from Pixabay we offer a Google Image search. As an example searching for 'Rosa Parks' in Pixabay returns no relevant images.

Safe search

Our Google Image search has the strictest safe search turned on just like in Google's own educational products, and for additional safety we also limit the websites queried to just a handful. As with Pixabay all the images returned from the Google search are copyright free.

Despite these safety features when offering a wide ranging image search there may be rare occasions when an unsuitable image is returned. For context, out of millions of images chosen by students and teachers each month we have had to block approximately 1000 images since the launch of Book Creator over 5 years ago. Typically these images were returned from a Google image search (and with a student directly looking for them).

With all this in mind, Book Creator offers several additional levels of control for teachers and admins to ensure image searching meets both the needs of your students and your digital safety requirements.

Blocking images

If an image is returned from a search that a teacher feels is inappropriate they can instantly block it by clicking on the flag next to the image. This will remove the image from any future searches in that teacher's library, but also for any teacher (and their students) that are listed in your Admin Dashboard.

Additionally, when an image is blocked by any teacher anywhere in the world using Book Creator it is reviewed by our Content moderation team, typically within 24 hours, and we assess whether we should block the image globally for all Book Creator users.

Configuring image search in a library

For teachers that want further control over image search it can be controlled in the settings for a library. Teachers can choose to turn off Google's image search and just have Pixabay results, or turn off image search altogether.

Further controls for Admins

It is also possible for Admins to turn off Google image search for all teachers and students in your account. We recommend this only as a final resort as it will significantly impact the ability of students to find images and create books on a wide range of subjects. Please contact your Teacher Success Manager or Account Manager if you would like to discuss this option.
