How to set up a custom-value gift card

This article now covers the old Back Office and the new Back Office.

By giving your members the freedom to set their own amount, you can increase both the number and average value of gift cards sold, helping you make the most of the season's generosity.

Beyond Christmas, this feature makes your gift cards even more appealing all year round — perfect for birthdays, celebrations, or simply treating a loved one.

Let's look at how to set them up.

Create a gift card

  • As with any other gift card, go to Products > Gift cards

  • Click Add a gift card

  • In the form, turn on Custom value

  • Set the minimum and maximum value your members will be able to enter

    • The amount chosen by your members must fall within this range

  • Keep in mind that:

    • You can only enter whole numbers

    • Neither field can be negative

    • The minimum value is 1 and the maximum is 1500

    • The maximum must be greater than the minimum

  • Complete the rest of the form and click Save

Your first custom-value gift card has been created!

This feature is also available on Master Accounts with shared databases.

Why a maximum of 1500?

At bsport, we use Stripe as our payment provider. For gift cards, Stripe doesn't allow a value higher than $2000 (USD). If a gift card is sold at a higher price, Stripe could penalise the corresponding account and cut off all payments.

To avoid this scenario, and also to keep a safety margin since the value of money varies over time, we decided to set a limit of 1500 for all currencies. This ensures we never exceed the limit imposed by Stripe.

What will your members see?

  • On the member side, custom-value gift cards will appear at the top of the list.

  • Once in the purchase flow, they'll see a Custom value field where they can enter the amount they'd like to offer.

  • Custom-value gift cards can be a printable code or activated via a link.

Custom-value gift cards are now available in the app from version 7.31. Ask your account manager to update your app.

Reports

In both reports:

  • Gift cards

  • Gift cards purchased

You'll now have a Type column, indicating the type of gift card.

  • Free amount: for your custom-value gift cards

  • Fixed: for fixed-value gift cards

If you don't see this new column, you can add it by editing your default view.

In the new Back Office

Terminology update: Master Accounts are now called Central Accounts in the new Back Office.

The logic hasn't changed: you still create a gift card and turn on Custom value to let your members choose their own amount. What's changed is where you create it and how you edit it afterwards.

Step 1: Create the gift card

Go to Products > Gift cards and click Create gift card to open the creation window.

Step 2: Turn on Custom value

In the creation window, turn on Custom value and set the minimum and maximum amount your members can enter.

The same rules apply as before:

  • Whole numbers only, and neither field can be negative

  • The minimum value is 1 and the maximum is 1500

  • The maximum must be greater than the minimum

Step 3: Save

Complete the rest of the form — image, name, description, availability, payment methods — then confirm to save.

Editing after creation

Creating and editing are now separate processes. To edit an existing custom-value gift card, click it in the list to open its dedicated detail page, where each field can be edited directly. Archived gift cards can be found under the Archive button at the top of the page.

What hasn't changed

The custom-value rules (1–1500 range, whole numbers), what your members see when purchasing, the reason for the 1500 limit (Stripe), and the Type column in your reports (Free amount / Fixed) all work exactly as before. This feature is also available on Central Accounts with shared databases.
