Understanding Flexible Cost Splitting for Group Bookings

This article explains how cost splitting works, what happens if plans change, and what to expect if something goes wrong.

Flexible cost splitting lets groups share the cost of a stay while keeping payments clear and individual. Each person pays only for their part, and payments are handled as the group comes together.

1. How costs are split

When a group booking is created:

  • The person creating the booking chooses how costs are shared (for example, by room or by share).

  • Each guest is responsible only for their assigned portion.

  • Guests pay individually — there’s no need for one person to collect money from everyone else.

Costs shown at checkout include all applicable fees for each guest.

2. When payments happen

Payment timing depends on the booking’s status:

  • In most cases, no one is charged until the booking is ready to be confirmed.

  • Guests who join earlier may see their payment authorised first.

  • Final charges are processed once all required spots are filled and payment details are verified.

Until confirmation:

  • No payments are completed

  • Guests can still join or leave without being charged

3. What happens if someone drops out

What happens next depends on when a guest leaves and the cancellation terms shown during booking.

Before the booking is confirmed

  • Guests can usually leave without being charged.

  • Their spot becomes available for someone else to join.

After the booking is confirmed

  • Refunds may be full, partial, or unavailable, depending on the policy.

  • In many cases, individual cancellations only refund platform fees.

  • The group can continue if another guest takes the open spot.

  • A full group cancellation typically requires everyone to agree.

4. Failed or delayed payments

Sometimes a payment doesn’t go through right away.

This can happen if:

  • A bank blocks the transaction

  • There aren’t enough funds available

  • The payment is still being processed

If this happens:

  • The booking stays unconfirmed until the issue is resolved.

  • Other guests are not automatically charged to cover the missing payment.

If your payment fails or stays pending:

  • Try again or use a different payment method

  • Check with your bank

  • Allow some extra time if the payment is still processing

5. What can and can’t be changed

To keep bookings fair and consistent:

What you can do

  • Join or leave a group before confirmation

  • Replace a guest who drops out before confirmation

  • Continue the booking if an open spot is filled

What can’t be changed

  • Costs can’t be moved from one guest to another

  • Payments can’t be forced or reassigned

  • Refund amounts and deadlines follow the cancellation policy shown during booking

Common issues to be aware of

  • Payments don’t always happen immediately after joining

  • Costs don’t rebalance automatically if someone leaves

  • A pending payment does not mean the booking is confirmed

  • Refunds depend on timing and booking type
