Paying Taxes with Chexy: Types, Costs & Processing

Which taxes you can pay, fees, CRA processing timeline, SIN requirements, and municipal tax payments.

Chexy currently supports personal income tax payments to the CRA, property tax payments to registered municipalities, and business tax payments. This article covers everything you need to know about paying taxes through Chexy — supported tax types, fees, processing timelines, SIN requirements, and how municipal tax payments work.

Which Types of Taxes Can I Pay?

Personal Income Taxes

  • To pay personal income tax, select "Pay Income Tax" on your Chexy dashboard.

  • Personal income taxes must be submitted as one-time payments (recurring payments are not available for this category).

Supported CRA Payees:

  • CRA REVENUE 2024 TAX RETURN / ARC IMPÔTS 2024

  • CRA REVENUE BENEFITS AND CREDITS / ARC CRÉDITS

  • CRA TAX INSTALMENT / ARC ACOMPTES PROVISIONNELS

  • CRA CANADA EMERGENCY BENEFIT REPAYMENT

  • CRA PAST TAX OWED / ARC SOLDE DU ANTÉRIEUR

  • Revenu Québec – Code de paiement / Payment Code

For more details on the types of individual taxes supported, visit this CRA page.

Property Taxes

  • Property taxes can be set up as either a recurring or one-time payment.

  • To pay property taxes, select "Municipal Taxes" and search for your municipality in the list of registered Bill Pay payees.

  • If the amount is the same each time, a recurring payment may be best. If the amount varies, use a one-time payment.

Below are some common payees and their required account details:

Toronto:

  • Payee name: CITY OF TORONTO PROPERTY TAXES

  • Account number: 21-digit assessment roll number (found on your tax bill or property tax account statement). More info.

Montreal:

  • Payee name: VILLE DE MONTRÉAL TAXES FONCIÈRES

  • Account number: Reference number from the notice (without hyphens). More info.

Vancouver:

  • Payee name: VANCOUVER, CITY OF-PROPERTY TAXES

  • Account number: 12-digit folio number. More info.

Calgary:

Business Taxes

Chexy also supports business tax payments. To get started, select the appropriate payee from the Bill Pay list on your dashboard.

What Does It Cost?

Chexy's fees for tax payments are the same as for any other payment and depend on which credit card you use to make the payment.

  • The processing fee will be added at checkout, so when entering your payment amount, make sure to input the exact amount you owe after filing your taxes.

CRA Income Tax Processing Timeline

Once you complete your payment through Chexy, allow up to 8 business days for the CRA to process it. To avoid delays or potential late fees, we recommend making your payment well in advance of your due date.

  • Business Day 0: You complete your tax payment through Chexy, and your credit card is charged immediately.

  • Business Day 3: Chexy sends the payment to the CRA, and the CRA marks your taxes as "paid" in their system.

  • Business Day 8: Your payment should appear in your CRA online account.

Important Note: These timelines refer to business days only and may be affected by weekends and holidays. If your payment date falls on a holiday, processing will begin on the next business day.

How Will I Know My Payment Is Complete?

Since Chexy does not have access to CRA's internal processing, the best way to confirm your payment has been received is to check your CRA online account:

  1. Sign in to your account.

  2. Click on "Accounts and Payments" in the left-hand menu.

  3. Your payment should appear on this page.

If your payment does not show up after 8 business days, we recommend reaching out to the CRA directly for assistance.

Why Do You Need My SIN?

Your SIN (Social Insurance Number) is required by the CRA to ensure that your tax payment is correctly linked to your personal account. Rest assured, your information is encrypted and securely stored and then immediately deleted once your payment is sent in order to protect your privacy.

How Are Municipal Taxes Paid?

Municipal taxes can be paid via:

  • PAD (Pre-Authorized Debit) — if the city allows pre-authorized debit changes

  • Bill Pay — if listed in your bank's bill payment directory

Chexy processes these payments through Canada's bill payment network or the PAD matching system.

If using PAD:

  • Ensure the city has updated your void cheque to Chexy's banking details. You can generally find information on this by searching [City Name] "municipal taxes PAD".

If using Bill Pay:

  • Select the correct municipal entity exactly as listed. Make sure you confirm the account number with the payee. The digit requirements mentioned on the new payments page are accurate and exceptions cannot be made to the length of the code.

Once sent, funds are transmitted like a standard bank bill payment.

I Don't See My Payee Listed — What Should I Do?

If your tax payee is not listed in Chexy's search, it likely means that we do not currently support payments to that payee.

  • Not all municipalities are registered Bill Pay payees — if you don't see yours, it may not be available.

  • If a specific CRA payment type is missing, confirm the correct payee name on the CRA's website.

If you're unsure whether a payee is supported, try searching by full name or keywords in the Bill Pay payee list.
