What is Bill Pay?
Bill Pay lets you send payments directly to registered payees through Canada's banking network, just like paying through your online banking. Unlike Pre-Authorized Debit (PAD), where the payee auto-withdraws funds, Bill Pay requires you to initiate the payment.
With Chexy, you pay via Bill Pay while earning credit card rewards — your payee gets paid exactly as they normally would, with no extra steps required on their end.
Which Payees Accept Bill Pay?
Bill Pay can only be used with registered payees. This includes:
Landlords and property management companies
Utility providers (hydro, gas, internet, phone)
Insurance companies
Government agencies (CRA, Revenu Québec, municipalities)
Daycares, gyms, and other service providers
If your payee isn't in our system, they may not be set up to accept Bill Pay payments. You can try contacting them to confirm, or use another delivery method like Interac e-Transfer or Pre-Authorized Debit (PAD).
How to Set Up a Bill Pay Payment
Select Bill Pay as your delivery method — When setting up your payment, choose Bill Pay as your payee's preferred payment option.
Find your payee in Chexy's list — Use the official name from a bill or statement to locate your payee in the registered payee list.
Enter your account number — This is the same account number you currently use to make Bill Pay payments through your online banking app. It is usually 7 or more digits and links the payment to you.
Confirm your payment details — Ensure your account number is entered correctly, as this is how your payee will recognize the payment is from you.
Important: Your payee relies on your account number to match the payment to your account. If the wrong number is entered, they may not be able to process your payment correctly.
Payment Processing Timeline
4 business days before your due date: Chexy charges your preferred credit card to ensure the funds settle before the payment is processed.
On your payment due date: Chexy sends the Bill Pay payment to your payee through Canada's banking network.
Processing varies: Some payees receive and apply the payment on the same day, while others may take 2–3 weeks to process and apply it to your account, depending on their internal systems.
Weekend & holiday processing: If your payment due date falls on a weekend or holiday, the payment will be processed on the next business day. This is standard banking practice for all Bill Pay transactions.
Good news: In most cases, once the payment is applied, it will be backdated and credited as of the date it was originally sent — not the day it was processed. So even if it takes a while, you typically won't be penalized for the delay.
After the Payment Is Sent
Your payee receives the payment directly in their bank account
Unlike Interac e-Transfer, your payee does not receive an email notification when a Bill Pay payment is sent.
The payment is deposited directly into their bank account, just like a regular Bill Pay transaction from your online banking.
The account number you entered is included with the payment, allowing your payee to correctly apply it to your account.
You will receive a confirmation email from Chexy
Once the Bill Pay payment has been sent, Chexy will email you a confirmation to let you know the payment has been processed.
Chexy cannot verify when the payment is successfully applied to your account, as we do not have access to your payee's banking information.
To confirm receipt, please check with your payee directly or review your payment status in their portal.
Fees
Chexy charges a processing fee based on your credit card type:
Canadian Visa & Amex: 1.75%
International Credit Cards: 2.5%
Can I Cancel or Edit a Bill Pay Payment?
Once a Bill Pay payment has been submitted to Canada's banking network, it cannot be cancelled or recalled.
If you need to make changes, you should:
Contact your payee directly to request a refund or adjustment
Set up a new payment with the correct details for future payments
Will Bill Pay Affect My Credit Score?
No. Using Bill Pay through Chexy does not directly affect your credit score. The credit card charges will appear on your credit card statement like any other purchase.
If you're paying rent through Chexy, you can also add Credit Builder to report your on-time rent payments to Equifax, which can help improve your credit score over time.
Can I Use Bill Pay for Business Payments?
Business income tax payments are not supported via Bill Pay. However, you can use Bill Pay for most other business expenses like insurance, utilities, and rent, as long as the payee accepts Bill Pay.
Bill Pay vs PAD vs e-Transfer

PAD (Pre-Authorized Debit) | Your payee automatically withdraws funds from your Chexy account | Recurring payments where the payee controls timing and amount |
