How do I use Chexy to pay business taxes to the CRA?

Step-by-step instructions for paying corporate taxes, payroll remittance, and GST/HST payments to the CRA.

Updated yesterday

Overview

  • This feature is only available for Chexy Users with a Small Business account (learn more here).

  • We can only process Business Tax CRA payments through our Pre-Authorized Debit (PAD) payout method.

  • This is a 2 step process:

    • First, set up a payment with Chexy

    • Then, log in to the CRA website, set up a PAD agreement, and enter your Chexy account details. This schedules a withdrawal date for the CRA to pull the funds from that account.

  • This is not the same as the Bill Pay method used for personal income tax payments through Chexy, which "pushes" or sends funds to the CRA

  • The CRA needs 6 business days' notice to create or edit a PAD agreement. If you have a payment due sooner than this, you'll have to pay normally outside of Chexy this month.

  • From Quebec or Alberta?

    • If you're paying corporate taxes to Revenu Quebec with a 20-digit payment code, just follow these instructions

    • We do not support corporate tax payments to the Government of Alberta

What you'll need to get started

  • A list of the types of taxes you want to pay

  • Amount for each, either provided by your accountant or your CRA account

  • An idea of frequency (one-time or monthly) and payment date for each

A special note on payroll remittances

  • Payroll remittances are due by the 15th of each month

  • Do not schedule payroll taxes to pay after the 15th, as they may be misallocated as a late payment for this month instead of an early payment for next month

  • Based on this, we suggest selecting a payment date of 1st to 11th for payroll remittances

Step 1: Set up your payment in Chexy

This step arranges for Chexy to charge your credit card three business days before your payment due date. This ensures funds will available in your Chexy account when the CRA makes the withdrawal.

1. From your dashboard, click New Payment.

2. Select Add a new payee → Business taxes & remittance → Pre-Authorized Debit (PAD)

  • Bill Pay is not supported for CRA business tax payments.

3. Enter the amount of your payment, along with a nickname i.e. ABC Co. Payroll Remittance Q1 2025. This allows you to differentiate between different payments.

4. Select if you'd like to set up a monthly or one-time payment.

  • Monthly: You'd like the payment to repeat automatically on a selected day of the month, each month. In this case, your card will be charged 3 business days before your scheduled due date.

  • One-time: You want to make an individual payment which will not repeat. In this case, your credit card will be charged as soon as you complete the setup, and the funds will be available for withdrawal in 3 business days.

5. Review details → Continue.

6. If this is your first payment with Chexy, you'll need to verify your identity and business details, link your Aeroplan account (optional), and add your credit card.

7. You'll get a chance to do a final review → press Pay now (if one-time) or Activate (if monthly).

8. Once completed, you'll be brought back to the home page of your dashboard. Click on the payment → PAD details button.

9. Take a screenshot of the account, transit, institution #, or download the void cheque with your Chexy account details. You’ll need this for Step 2.

Step 2: Set up or update a PAD agreement in your CRA account

This step gives permission for the CRA to withdraw your payment from your Chexy PAD account, and schedules the date for this.

If you have an existing PAD agreement:

1. In a separate tab, sign in to your CRA business account

2. Under "Business balance and services" → Manage pre-authorized debit

3. Select your agreement from the list.

4. As long as your payment is 6+ business days away, you should have the ability to edit your PAD agreement → Edit.

5. Make sure the "Next payment date" is on or after the "Funds available" date on Chexy, to ensure there are sufficient funds for them to withdraw.

6. Closer to the bottom, select Enter new banking information and update this with your Chexy account details from Step 1.

7. Review and Submit. Repeat this process for each PAD agreement (e.g., payroll, corporate taxes).

  • Your Chexy account details stay the same for every payment, but you must set up a separate Chexy payment for each tax you want to pay. This ensures there are sufficient funds in your wallet and helps avoid any issues with withdrawals.

If you've previously paid your corporate taxes through other methods such as Bill Pay, you'll need to create a new PAD agreement:

1. Follow 1-2 above.

2. Select Schedule payment(s), then pick the program account and payment allocation.

3. Enter the relevant details. For "How often?", select One time or Monthly (this should match what you selected in Chexy).

4. Pick the payment date. This is the date when the CRA will withdraw the funds from your Chexy account.

  • Make sure it's the same as or after the "Funds available" date that Chexy provided

5. Select Enter new banking information, and enter your Chexy PAD banking info from Step 1.

6. Review and Submit.

Once withdrawn, the CRA typically records the payment in your account as "successful" within in 1–2 business days.

Note: If you want to make any future changes to the date or amount, you'll need to update it in both Chexy and your CRA account!
