Hosted Video Automation Triggers

Learn how to create smart automations based on video engagement using the new video triggers in CCK

Updated over 2 months ago

Introduction

With CCK’s hosted video automation triggers, you can respond automatically to how people interact with your video content.

Whether someone starts a video, watches part of it, or finishes it, you can tailor follow-up messages, unlock lessons, or tag users for future campaigns. It's a powerful way to personalise the learning journey and boost engagement across your courses.

In this article, we’ll walk you through where to find these triggers, how to set them up, and a few great ways to use them.

Open your automation triggers

Head to your Messaging & Workflows section, navigate to Automations and select the + Create Automation option:

After you have created the new automation, click Triggers at the top of the screen and select + Add Trigger.

When you scroll down to the bottom of the pop-up menu, you will see the three new video-based options:

  • Video Started.

  • Video Portion Watched.

  • Video Completed.

Use the 'Video Started' trigger

This trigger activates when someone begins watching a hosted video.

How to set it up:

  • Choose Video Started from the list.

  • You can then select the video you want to track.

Ways you can use it:

  • Send a welcome or tip email: This is particularly useful for the first video in a course, such as "Here’s a quick tip before you continue".

  • Tag contacts for segmentation: E.g. Started Module 1 or Watched Free Training.

  • Trigger internal notifications: Alert yourself or a team member when someone starts a key video, such as a sales video.

  • Add a note to the contact: This is helpful for manually tracking interest.

Use the 'Video Portion Watched' trigger

This trigger fires when someone watches a selected portion of a video.

How to set it up:

  • Choose Video Portion Watched.

  • Select the video and specify how much needs to be watched (e.g., the first 30 seconds or 25%).

Ways you can use it:

  • Send a reminder email: “I noticed you didn’t finish the video; would you like to pick up where you left off?”

  • Move the user into a nurture sequence: Perfect for leads who are interested but haven’t taken action yet.

  • Tag contacts for future targeting: E.g. Partial Watch - Sales Video.

Use the 'Video Completed' trigger

This trigger fires when someone finishes a video from start to end.

How to set it up:

  • Choose Video Completed.

  • You can then select the relevant video.

Ways you can use it:

  • Send a next-step email: “Thanks for watching! Ready to book a free call?”

  • Unlock the next module or quiz: Great for educators and course creators.

  • Tag as a highly engaged lead: Use tags such as Completed Training or Qualified Lead.

  • Update contact properties: For example, set Video Progress to Complete to help with future segmentation.

  • Trigger advanced automations: Start a new automation sequence, delay follow-ups, or offer bonus content.

Additional Ideas for Using Video Triggers

Here are some smart automation ideas based on how people watch your videos:

For Course Creators:

  • Send orientation emails when a course video is started.

  • Trigger referral requests after a lesson is completed.

  • Segment learners based on how far they got in a video.

For Coaches and Consultants:

  • Offer a free consultation once someone finishes your intro video.

  • If they only watched part of a sales video, follow up with testimonials or a gentle nudge.

For Educators and Tutors:

  • Unlock new lessons or quizzes only after completion of the current one.

  • Encourage students who paused mid-lesson with tips or reminders.

Advanced Workflow Example

You can combine triggers for a more tailored student journey:

  1. Video Started → Tag as Module 1 Started.

  2. 48-hour delay.

  3. If the video is not completed, → Send a reminder.

  4. If the video is completed, → Tag as Module 1 Completed and unlock the following content.

  5. Final video completed → Send thank-you, testimonial request, or an upsell offer.
