Learn how (and why) to float or unfloat Items and Blocks in your Episode

Updated over a week ago

Why float content?

There can be multiple reasons to float content in an Episode (Rundown, Script):

  • If, for your specific show, you have the tendency to run long, you might have to float Parts, Items or Blocks that you won't have time for.

  • If, on the other hand, you have the tendency to run short, you might want to add extra content to the Rundown already, but in a floated state, so you can include it depending on the time available.

  • If you are making an Award show where an Award has multiple nominees, you might want to prepare for the different outcomes. You could prepare the videos and/or speeches for each nominee, and only unfloat the content you need for the actual winner.

  • If you are making a Sports show for a football (soccer) game, and in the post-game analysis you want to discuss multiple clips with highlights of the game, you might not have the time to discuss them all. Instead of removing these Clips (and Script text, if any) from your Rundown, you can simply float them instead.

  • And so on.

How to float content?

Floating can be done on either the Part, Item or Block. To float a Part, Item or Block, click the six dots on front of the Part, Item or Block, then turn on the 'Float' option.

The floated Part, Item or Block is now greyed out with diagonal lines on top, to indicate its floated state.

When floating a Part, all underlying Items and Blocks (Text and Cue Blocks) will be floated automatically as well.

When floating an Item, all underlying Blocks (Text and Cue Blocks) will be floated automatically as well.

When floating a Block, only the Block itself will be floated.

Effects of floating on the Episode (Rundown, Script)

As mentioned above, the very first effect of floating content will be the greyed out state with the diagonal lines on top.

  • When floating a Part:

    • the Part and all underlying Items and Blocks will be greyed out

    • the Part and all underlying Items and Blocks won't count towards the Timings anymore (which affects the Episode over/under)

  • When floating an Item:

    • the Item and all underlying Blocks will be greyed out

    • the Item and all underlying Blocks won't count towards the Timings anymore (which affects the parent Part Timings, as well as the Episode over/under)

  • When floating a Block, the Block itself:

    • will be greyed out

    • won't count towards the Timings anymore (which affects the parent Item and Part Timings, as well as the Episode over/under)

How to unfloat content?

To unfloat floated content, click the six dots on front of the floated Part, Item or Block, then turn off the 'Float' option.

If a Part as a whole has been floated, you cannot unfloat individual Items or Blocks within that Part. To unfloat individual Items or Blocks, first unfloat the Part itself, after which you can float Items and Blocks within the Part as needed.

If an Item as a whole has been floated, you cannot unfloat individual Blocks within that Item. To unfloat individual Blocks, first unfloat the Item itself, after which you can float Blocks within the Item as needed.

Use the keyboard shortcut to float and unfloat your content

You can float & unfloat your content, using the keyboard shortcut cmd+shift+F / crtl+shift+F.

You can also float and unfloat multiple Parts/Items/Blocks at the same time. Drag & select multiple Parts/Items/Blocks and float or unfloat them at once using the keyboard shortcut.
