Parts, Items and Blocks are used to build and structure your Episode

Updated over 11 months ago

When creating an Episode in Cuez you will use Parts, Items and Blocks to build and structure your Script and Rundown. Cuez lets you start with a set of default building elements, but you can also custom create your own, so you can make your Episode look how you want or need.

Parts

Parts allow you to form the main structure of an Episode. Depending on the type of show you are making, you might have a 'show open', followed by different topics or guests, to then end with your 'show close', for example. Or it can be as simple as a 'Part 1' before a commercial break, followed by a 'Part 2' after the break, and so on.
All of these will be Parts in which you can then add Items and Blocks. You can create as many Parts as needed.

Part options

For each Part in your Episode, certain actions can be performed via the two buttons that appear when hovering over a Part:

  • The '+' button allows you to add a new Part, Item or Block (more info below and in this article)

  • The six dots have multiple functions:

    • You can grab a Part by these six dots and drag & drop it to another location in your Episode to reorder your content (more info in this article)

    • You can click these six dots to open a menu where you can:

      • 'Go to Script': This option is only available in the Rundown side and when using the 'Rundown & Script' side-by-side layout. In this layout you can use the Rundown as a table of contents to navigate to a specific part of your Episode on the Script side of the layout.

      • 'Duplicate': To duplicate the selected Part, including all Items and Blocks that exist in the Part.

      • 'Delete': To delete the selected Part, including all Items and Blocks that exist in the Part. The deleted content will be moved to the Trash.

Items

Items are one level below Parts. You can have multiple Items within a Part, and an Item can exist out of multiple Blocks.

You can give an Item a title and then add all of your Blocks to it, which will represent the different (Script) Text Blocks, media, lower thirds, and so on.

Item options

For each Item in your Episode, certain actions can be performed via the two buttons that appear when hovering over an Item:

  • The '+' button allows you to add a new Part, Item or Block (more info below and in this article)

  • The six dots have multiple functions:

    • You can grab an Item by these six dots and drag & drop it to another location in your Episode to reorder your content (more info in this article)

      • 'Duplicate': To duplicate the selected Item, including all Blocks in the Item.

      • 'Item color': To give an Item a color for more visibility (more info in this article)

      • 'Add comment': To add a comment to an Item (more info in this article)

      • 'Delete': To delete the selected Item, including all Blocks in the Item. The deleted content will be moved to the Trash.

Blocks

Blocks are one level below Items. You can have multiple Blocks within an Item. Blocks can be either Text Blocks or Cue Blocks.

Cuez let's you start with a set of default Blocks, such as:

  • Prompter

  • Presenter Tablet

  • Clip

  • Graphic

  • Audio

  • Strap

Prompter and Presenter Tablet are so called Text Blocks, which give you a way to add your (Script) text to the Episode.
In the 'Add block' menu, Text Blocks can be recognised by the 'T' in front of them.
In the Script, the Text Blocks have a coloured line in front of them. Text Blocks are not shown in the Rundown.

Clip, Graphic, Audio and Strap (a.k.a. Lower Third) are Cue Blocks, which allow you to add different types of media and other cues to your Episode (VT's, graphics, straps, wipes, bugs,...).
In the 'Add block' menu, Cue Blocks can be recognised by the 'CUE' in front of them.
In the Script, as well as the Rundown, the Cue Blocks have a coloured background.

Blocks can also be custom created to make sure you can distinguish between different types of content you want to add to your Episode.

You could create multiple Text Blocks, one for each of your presenters, for example, so it is clearly visible which text is for which presenter. You could add a Live or a Voiceover Text Block. You could create Cue Blocks for different types of Straps, a Cue Block for prerecorded segments, and so on.

For more information on Blocks and how to create your own Block configurations, see the separate article.

Parts, Items and Blocks can be added to an Episode in multiple ways:

  • You can either (1) hover over an existing Part/Item/Block to then use the '+' button, which opens a menu where you can select which type of content you want to add.

  • Or you can (2) use the 'Add block' option at the bottom of your Script/Rundown, which will reveal the same menu.
