Why does my video look washed out or faded after uploading?

Understand why HDR footage can look duller after upload, and how to bring the colour back in the editor

Written by Libby

Summary
Video footage, especially clips shot on iPhone, can look duller or more washed out after uploading to Cuttable than it did on your phone. This happens because of how Cuttable converts HDR video for ads, and you can bring the colour back using the Adjust panel in the editor.

Why this happens

Faded or washed-out colour after upload is usually caused by HDR (High Dynamic Range) footage. Many phones, including recent iPhones, record video in HDR by default. When Cuttable converts that footage to the standard dynamic range (SDR) format used for ads, colours and contrast can appear flatter than in the original file. This is a side effect of the conversion, not a permanent loss of quality in your source video.

How to fix it in Cuttable

You can restore lost colour and contrast directly in the editor using the Adjust panel.

  1. Open the ad in the editor by selecting Edit this ad.

  2. Select the affected video layer in the Player.

  3. Open the Adjust panel in the Sidebar.

  4. Use the Brightness, Contrast, Saturation, Warmth, and Hue sliders to bring the footage back closer to its original look.

Adjustments apply in both the editor preview and your final exported ad, so check the preview as you make changes. See How to Edit Your Ad in Cuttable for the full guide to the Adjust panel.

How to reduce this before you upload

You can avoid the HDR-to-SDR conversion causing this in the first place by changing how you capture or share your footage.

  • If your phone lets you choose, shoot in SDR (standard, non-HDR) mode instead of HDR. This avoids the conversion step entirely.

  • If you have already shot in HDR, exporting or sharing the clip once, for example by AirDropping it or sending it through a messaging app, can flatten it to SDR before you upload it to Cuttable.

Still looks off?
