What the Missing Teeth Pop-Up Means (Dentrix Desktop)

Fix the pop-up "Bola can't detect Missing teeth / Cursor information from your PM" by making the entire perio chart visible with Bola beside it, and by confirming your display resolution, scaling, and chart colors.

While perio charting in Dentrix Desktop, Bola may show this pop-up:

Missing Teeth

  • Bola can't detect Missing teeth / Cursor information from your PM.

  • We've added a new button called Mark Missing Teeth to your home screen.

  • Use it to mark missing, unerupted, and impacted teeth with your voice or mouse.

What it means

This message appears when Bola's missing teeth identification step does not complete. When you clicked the perio chart, Bola could not read the missing teeth or the cursor position from Dentrix, so it is asking you to mark them manually. Nothing is wrong with your patient data.

The most common cause

Bola reads the perio chart from your screen. If the Bola window is sitting on top of the perio chart, or any part of the chart is hidden or off screen, detection fails and this pop-up appears.

The Bola app and the perio chart also have to be on the same screen. Bola can only read a chart that is on the same display as the Bola app, so if the perio chart is moved to a second monitor or a television while the Bola app stays behind on the original screen, detection fails. A window split across two screens fails the same way. Move both onto one screen, then press Start New Chart and click the perio chart header again.

Also check your display settings

Because Bola reads the perio chart from your screen, display settings that change how the chart is drawn can break detection even when the whole chart is visible. Confirm all three:

  • Resolution is 1920 x 1080 or higher.

  • Scaling is set to 100%. Having the screen zoomed in or out is not recommended.

  • Colors are rendering normally. Bola matches the chart as it appears on screen, so anything that shifts the colors can break detection. Confirm color depth is set to 32-bit True Color rather than 16-bit (Display adapter properties, then List All Modes), that HDR and Night Light are turned off (Settings > System > Display), and that the Dentrix perio chart is not using customized colors.

Windows keeps resolution and scaling separate for each display, so check them on the screen you are actually charting on rather than only the main one. A television used as a second display often defaults to a scaling value above 100% and turns HDR on by itself, and either one alone will break detection.

See Bola System Requirements for the full list of supported settings.

If resolution, scaling, and colors are all correct and this happens on only one computer, antivirus or endpoint protection on that machine may be blocking Bola from reading the chart. Ask your IT team to allow the Bola app, then test again.

How to fix it

  1. Position the Bola app on the same screen as the Dentrix perio chart, beside it rather than on top of it. The entire perio chart must be visible on that screen.

  2. Press Start New Chart in the Bola app.

  3. Click the header of the perio chart. This re-triggers the missing teeth identification step.

  4. Look for the success message in the Bola app, and confirm the Dentrix cursor and the Bola app show the same tooth position.

If detection still fails

Mark the teeth manually and keep charting:

  • Say "Mark missing, 1, 16, 17, 32" (use your patient's tooth numbers), or

  • Use the button shown in the pop-up (labeled Mark Missing Teeth, or Select Teeth to Skip on Perio Chart in some versions) and click the teeth in the tooth graph. There is also a "Mark Wisdom Teeth Missing" checkbox for teeth 1, 16, 17, and 32.
