MDM / Intune compatibility notice for the Fire Studio iPad Player

If your department uses Microsoft Intune or another MDM to deploy software, this article explains issues with the Fire Studio iPad Edition.

MDM / Intune Compatibility Notice

Microsoft Intune
Apple iPadOS

Overview

At this time, the Fire Studio iPad Player does not support loading or deploying simulation files through Mobile Device Management (MDM) systems, including Microsoft Intune or similar platforms.

This includes:

  • Simulation files (.dcs / .lbr and .dcx)

  • Scenario packages

What this means

If your organization is using Intune or another MDM solution, you cannot:

  • Push simulation files directly to the Fire Studio app

  • Automatically deploy simulations to iPads through MDM

  • Pre-load simulation content during device provisioning

MDM platforms can install the Fire Studio app itself, but they cannot load simulation files into the app.

Why this limitation exists

This restriction is due to how iPadOS handles application data:

  • Each app operates in a secure, isolated storage area (sandbox)

  • External systems (including MDM tools) cannot directly access or modify an app’s internal files

  • Apple's USB file-sharing method is not available through MDM platforms

Because of these platform-level restrictions, simulation files must be loaded using supported Apple file transfer methods.

Supported method for loading simulations

Simulations must be copied onto the iPad over a USB cable using:

  • Apple Devices app (Windows)

  • Finder (macOS Catalina and newer)

Step-by-step instructions: Transferring simulations to the iPad Player (from Windows or Mac). Your IT team may need to allow USB connections, device trust and file sharing (in Intune this is often the "Allow iTunes File Sharing" setting).

Summary

  • The Fire Studio iPad Player can possibly be installed via MDM (it will still need to be activated with its License ID and password outside the MDM)

  • Simulation files cannot be deployed via MDM

  • Simulation files must be loaded manually using Apple file transfer tools

Future considerations

We are aware that many organizations are moving toward fully managed deployments using MDM platforms. Support for improved enterprise deployment workflows is something we are actively pursuing.

Limitations

  • This guidance reflects current iPadOS platform restrictions and Fire Studio’s current capabilities

  • We cannot confirm future Apple or MDM feature changes that may alter this behavior
