Virtual whiteboard

Interactive whiteboard for collaboration with your students in virtual classroom

Updated over a year ago

Edvibe Virtual Whiteboard is a convenient tool for presenting educational material. You can work with students on the virtual board using desktop and mobile devices.

How to open the virtual whiteboard

The board is located in the virtual classroom and is available for both individual and group classes. To open the virtual whiteboard, enter the virtual classroom and click the corresponding button.

To move students to the virtual whiteboard, click the "Follow me" button.

Note: You can only move students to the board if they are in the virtual classroom. Additionally, students can independently open or close the virtual whiteboard.

Each virtual classroom has its own dedicated whiteboard. It means that any content you have on the board will only appear in the particular classroom whose board is now open.

Actions with students on the board

In the top right corner of the screen, you will see avatars of the teacher and students. By clicking on the avatar list, you can see the avatars of students who are currently viewing the board.

In the student settings menu, the teacher can either allow or prevent students from interacting with the board content. This action applies to all students at once.

In this menu, the teacher can also turn on or off student cursors. If cursors are enabled, students can see the positions of the teacher's cursor and each other's cursors on the virtual board in real-time. If they are disabled, students can only see the teacher's cursor.

Whiteboard Tools

The tools are located on the panel, which is situated on the left side of the whiteboard.

  1. Pointer

    Selects objects for further manipulation.

  2. Hand
Allows you to move the canvas of the board with all the objects.

  3. Text
Creates a text input field. You can customize the text size, color, outline, style, and transparency.

  4. Sticker
Creates a sticker. You can customize the sticker color and work with text on the sticker.

  5. Shape
Allows you to create shapes such as rectangles, ellipses (circles), or triangles with any aspect ratio. Each shape can be customized with an outline and fill. For the outline, you can specify thickness, transparency, and color. For the fill, you can adjust the color and transparency. To create "straight" shapes like a circle, square, or isosceles triangle, hold down the Shift key.

  6. Arrow or Line
Draws straight lines or arrows. You can adjust the color and thickness.

  7. Brush
Draws freehand shapes with the cursor. You can change the color, transparency, and thickness.

  8. Image
Uploads an image to the board from the user's device or clipboard using the Ctrl+v (Windows) or Cmd+v (MacOS) key combination.

See the examples below:

After clicking on any created object, a panel with functionality specific to that object type appears. Any object can be locked to prevent editing or deleted.

Right-clicking on an object on the board opens a context menu with actions for the objects.

  1. Point to this object: Used as a pointer. Centers the screens of students on the selected object.

  2. Copy: Copies the selected object. The copied object can be pasted using the Paste button or the Ctrl+V (or Cmd+V for MacOS) key combination.

  3. Lock: Locks one or more objects. Once activated, neither the teacher nor the students can move or edit the object. For locked objects, the Unlock button in this menu will be active and can unlock the object. Additionally, an object can be unlocked by clicking on the padlock icon at the top of the object.

  4. To front: Moves the selected object to the front.

  5. To back: Moves the object to the back.

  6. Delete: Deletes the object from the board.

The same actions can be performed using hotkeys.

Hotkeys

The list of hotkeys is located in the actions menu at the top left corner of the canvas. Select the corresponding menu item.

You will see a list of key combinations that significantly accelerate the work on the board platform.

Let's consider a few examples of using hotkeys when working with board objects.

To insert text on the board, press the T key on the keyboard. As a result, the "Text" function will become active, and you can enter text.

The platform supports certain key combinations for text editing.

Ctrl(cmd)+a - select all text.
Ctrl(cmd)+b - apply bold font to the selected area.
Ctrl(cmd)+i - apply italics to the selected area.
Ctrl(cmd)+u - apply underline to the selected area.

Similarly, when working with other objects, the S key activates the Sticky Notes tool, L for Line, R for Rectangle shape, V for Cursor, and so on.

Let's consider hotkeys for actions on objects using the opacity parameter as an example.

Select an object with opacity adjustment, such as Text or Shapes (ellipse, rectangle, triangle), and press any digit from 1 to 9. The transparency of the shape's fill and the text background will change depending on the selected digit.

Other Actions with the Whiteboard

In addition to the list of hotkeys, the actions menu includes other options.

  1. Open board: Open one of the previously saved whiteboards.

  2. Save as: Save the current whiteboard. The system will prompt you to give the board a name, upload a cover image, and choose a folder (or no folder) to save the board.

  3. Screenshot: The system takes a screenshot of the board and saves it on your device.

  4. Clear board: Clear the board.

Whiteboard Templates

Teachers can prepare whiteboard templates in advance and quickly load them into different classes. All templates are stored in a separate "Whiteboards" tab in the Materials.

Templates can be sorted into folders. To create a folder, hold down the left mouse button on one of the boards templates and drag it onto another template. The system will prompt you to select the templates to move into the folder, give the folder a name, and choose its color.

You can delete or edit any of the created boards.

Created board templates can be opened in preview mode and added to classes.

If the class whiteboard already has content, you can erase everything from the board before opening a template, save the current content as another template, or merge the current content with the opened template within one board.

Sharing a Board Template

To share a board template with colleagues, open the whiteboard template in preview mode and click on the "arrow" button.

Two links will be available for copying: one with the ability to save and one without.

Copy the required link and send it to your colleagues. They will be able to preview your template or save it into their Edvibe account.
