Internet connection tips for Elevien competitions

Speed, Performance, and Best Practices

Updated this week

1. Internet Connection Requirements

  • A stable internet connection is essential for a smooth Elevien experience. Ensure internet coverage at the competition venue and verify that your devices are updated and properly connected.

2. Testing Internet Speed

  • The quality of the internet connection directly impacts the speed of video uploads.

  • At the competition venue, please verify the internet speed by using a device such as a laptop or mobile phone.

  • Access a service like speedtest.net to check your upload speed.

  • The minimum requirement is a 20 Mbps upload speed for a smooth uploading experience.

  • Alternatively, you can test upload speeds directly through the app by creating a private test competition, recording, and uploading sample videos to monitor the upload speed.

3. Expected Upload Performance

  • With an upload speed of at least 20 Mbps, a routine video should upload in just a few seconds.

  • For comparison:

    • At 20 Mbps, a typical video uploads in ~10–15 seconds.

    • At 5 Mbps, the same video may take ~1 minute.

  • Many modern internet providers deliver speeds well above 20 Mbps, which will make uploads even faster.

4. Handling Slow Internet Connections

  • If your upload speed is lower than recommended, upload times will increase and videos may queue until the connection improves.

  • If an upload fails due to a broken internet connection, don’t worry: the video is saved in your phone’s gallery, and you can re-upload it manually once the connection is restored.

  • If possible, switch to a faster available network.

5. Choosing the Best Network

  • If both Wi-Fi and mobile data are available, test both and use the faster option. Large venues may also offer multiple Wi-Fi networks or mobile providers, so choose the one with the best performance.

  • Connection quality may vary depending on your exact location within the venue, so test the exact spot where recordings will take place.

6. Network Load Considerations

  • When many people are using the same Wi-Fi, like judges and the public at a competition, the upload speed can slow down.

  • This means your videos might take longer to upload. To avoid this problem, it's best to have a separate Wi-Fi network just for the devices that will record and judge.

  • Keep this in mind when you're getting ready to upload your videos so you can have the best experience possible.
