Run Eve's Skills (Use Playbooks and Instructions)

How to use Eve's pre-set messages and instructions - leveraging Skills.

Updated over 6 months ago

Summary

In this guide we will take you through the steps of running the pre-built Skills in Eve’s library. We will give a brief overview of Eve's skill library, discuss the two kinds of skills available (pre-build skills and playbooks), provide step-by-step instructions on how to run a skill, and share some best practices on getting the most value from your skill usage.

Skills Overview

Eve has a vast Skill Library, a repository of prebuilt skills or tasks that Eve can take on.

Each skill guides Eve through a preset process, helping you take on particular tasks. For example, running through preliminary case analysis, brainstorming interrogatories, or identifying inconsistencies across depositions (just to name a few).

Think of skills as a template on how to work through a task, getting you an initial pass within seconds and minutes. But don't stop with the first template, you can go deeper, iterate, explore further, and eventually customize the skill to your own process and needs.

Skill Types

There are two types of skills in Eve's library: pre-set instructions and playbooks

Pre-Set Instructions are the context for your project. Tasks will allow you to provide key information about your case and work at hand. For example, the case details, parties involved, etc.

Read more about instructions here.

Playbooks are saved messages that will automatically run you through a series of questions and requests for the task at hand.

Think of instructions as the overarching background to the work, and playbooks as the execution of the work.

Note: Our skill library is always growing, so stay on the lookout for new skills that Eve's team releases.

Step-by-Step Instructions - Using Pre-Set Instructions

Step 1: Open the Instructions Panel

First, make sure that your Instructions panel is open in the left half of your screen. You can open and close the panel by clicking on the “Instructions” line item in the left hand panel.

Step 2: Open the Instructions Library

To open the library of pre-saved Instructions, click on the (+) in the top right corner of the editing panel. This will open a library of pre-saved instructions that you can use as templates for your work.

Step 3: Select your Instructions

Browse through the list of pre-set Instructions and select the one that you will be leveraging for your current needs.

Once you’ve selected your Instructions, they will populate in the text panel.

💡 Pro Tip: Treat pre-set Instructions as a starting template, not as a final document. We encourage you to edit the contents of pre-set instructions, adding key case details, update templated information, or removing sections that might not be relevant to the task at hand.

Once your instructions are set, you can proceed to asking Eve to help you take on your work in the right-hand panel of your screen.

Step-by-Step Instructions - Running a Playbook

Step 1: Open the Skill Library

First, refer to the Skills button in Eve, and upload any relevant documents you want Eve to analyze.

💡 Pro Tip: If you are running a playbook, upload your documents first and select them under Using Files, then choose your skill, so that Eve is using your read in data to perform key actions.

Click on the (Skills) button in the chat box with Eve.

This will open up the list of playbooks you have available in your Skill Library. This will include all message-based prompts that the Eve team has created and any saved messages that you and your team have made.

Step 2: Selecting your Skill

Find the playbook that you are looking for. You can browse through the full library, search for a skill by name, or filter by the skill categories on the dropdown menu - you can filter by the practice area (or category) of the playbook or by the ownership of the playbook - created by you or others.

Step 3: Running your Playbook

Once you're found the playbook you need, you can select it, choose the documents you need Eve to use and then run them all automatically.

To preview the messages, click on the playbook and you will see the messages description included.

Note: To run the Legal Research skill, simply find it in the list and click on it. This will open the modal to input your legal research query.

Tips and Best Practices

Upload documents before running skills

Upload your documents before running your skill so that Eve has your information to work off of. Eve can be eager to please, and running a playbook without uploading data will have placeholder information in the results.

Treat Skill templates as starting points to iterate on

Think of Skills as templates that will get you started. Run Skills and then ask follow up and clarifying questions to iterate on results.

🗒️ Example Message 1: "Why did you come up with that result?"

🗒️ Example Message 2: "Can I get more detail on the second point you made?"

Use individual Sessions for each case task

If you're working on long cases with multiple tasks, start a separate Session for each unique task. This will keep Eve focused on the work at hand, and allow you to maximize the quality of your responses.
