With the Shift Color feature in Expressway Scheduling, you can easily assign colors to shifts to help visually organize your schedule. Whether you want to color-code shifts by job, role, or team, you now have the flexibility to set default colors for jobs and customize individual shift colors right in the scheduler.
Here’s how it works:
Option 1: Set a Default Shift Color for a Job
If you want all shifts tied to a specific job to automatically appear in a specific color, you can set a default shift color in your job settings.
To set a default shift color for a job:
Go to the Settings modal in the scheduler.
From the left-hand menu, select Jobs.
You’ll see a table listing all jobs tied to your location. Each row includes:
Job Name
Default Shift Color
Action icons to edit or delete (if applicable)
Click the Edit icon next to the job you’d like to update.
Use the color picker to select a Default Shift Color.
Click the ✓ icon to save your changes, or the X icon to cancel.
Note:
Jobs that come from your point of sale (POS) system can’t be renamed or deleted in Expressway, but you can change their default shift color.
A banner at the top of the page will remind you that POS-synced jobs must be updated in the POS if you want to rename or remove them.
Once saved, that color will automatically apply to any new shift created for that job. You can still override it when needed (see below).
Option 2: Pick a Shift Color Manually When Adding or Editing a Shift
If you want more control or need to assign a different color for a specific shift, you can do that directly in the Add/Edit Shift modal.
To assign a shift color manually:
Go to the Shifts view in the scheduler.
Click on a time slot or employee row to open the Add Shift screen.
Choose the Job for the shift. The shift color will automatically default to the job’s color (if one is set).
If you want to change the color:
Click the Color Picker icon next to the shift details.
Choose your preferred color from the palette.
Finish setting the rest of the shift details (start time, end time, notes, etc.) and click Save.
Why Use Shift Colors?
Using shift colors makes your schedule easier to read at a glance. You can:
Quickly spot different roles on the schedule.
Visually group teams or tasks by color.
Make overlapping or multi-role shifts stand out.
Whether you want consistency across jobs or flexibility shift by shift, the new shift color options make your scheduling workflow smoother and more organized.
