Overview
This guide explains how to use Extern’s subscription-based student portal, where you can access your active externships, completed programs, and available opportunities.
The correct URL for this version of the portal is app.extern.com.
Accessing the Portal
When you log in, you’ll see your current externship at the top of the page.
Only one externship can be active at a time.
Completed externships will appear below your active one.
To explore new opportunities, scroll down to the Explore section to browse Extern’s program catalog.
If you see other programs that interest you, you can bookmark them for later. These bookmarked externships remain visible as long as they’re open for enrollment.
Exploring Externships
From the Explore section, you can view details for each externship, including:
Start date of live sessions
Program duration
End date
You can also use filters to find programs that match your career interests or skill goals.
Accessing Your Program
Under the My Programs tab, you’ll find:
Your active program
Any saved spots
Your completed programs
To open your externship modules:
Select your current externship.
You’ll see your Program Manager’s contact information, start and end dates, and a progress tracker.
Projects are listed in sequential order—begin with Orientation, then complete each project in order until the final presentation.
The project start dates shown are meant for tracking your pace, not strict deadlines. You can work at your own speed, depending on which award you aim for.
Using the Menu
Click the hamburger menu (☰) in the upper-right corner to access key sections:
My Programs – View your active and completed externships.
Bookmarks – Review programs you’ve saved for later.
Catalog – Explore the full list of available externships.
Awards – Check your award status once your cohort’s end date has passed.
You don’t need to stay subscribed to receive an award. If you unsubscribe before your award is issued, you’ll receive it by email once it’s posted.
Managing Your Account and Subscription
Under My Account, you can:
Update personal details and linked accounts
View subscription information
Manage your subscription (pause or cancel as needed)
Help and Support
If you experience technical issues or have questions, visit the Help Center.
From there, you can:
Submit a request that goes directly to Extern Support
Browse the Knowledge Base for answers related to your externship experience, awards, and account
