Method of showing discounts: Introducing the "Function" and "Cookie" methods and their differences.

Updated over a week ago

In Fast Bundle there are two types of discount application methods.

1 ) Function discount

The Function discount is an automated discount code that utilizes Shopify functions to implement the discount at both the cart and checkout stages. In your list of Shopify discounts, only one discount code is generated for this purpose.

2 ) Cookie discount

For each session including a bundle purchase (customer-cart experience), we generate a distinct discount code, which is then stored as a product discount within your list of Shopify discounts. This discount is saved in cookies and retrieved from them to be displayed on your cart page and during checkout.

The terms are used by our developers to refer to Fast Bundle's different discount application methods. Here we explain these two methods and delve into their differences.

Discount

Here we explain the two methods, how it's presented in the cart and checkout, and how this discount code is stored in Shopify.

Function Method

In the Fast Bundle Settings

Please go to Fast Bundle admin > Settings > Bundle settings > Discount > Discount label.

If you see just a word without any additional string of random numbers, then you are using the Function method. (The default label is BUNDLE but it's editable)

Cart and Checkout

Let's see how the Function discount application method will appear in the cart and checkout. As you can see, the discount label is appearing without any string of numbers.

In Shopify Discounts

This is how this discount application code will appear on your Shopify panel > Discounts.

Cookie Discount

In the Fast Bundle Settings

Please go to Fast Bundle admin > Settings > Bundle settings > Discount > Discount label.

If you see a text with a string of numbers, then you are using this discount application method. (You change the word but the the string of numbers is unique for each discount code and will have a different value per shopping cart.)

Cart and Checkout

Let's see how this discount application method will appear in the cart and checkout.

In Shopify Panel

This is how this discount application code will appear on your Shopify panel > Discounts.

As we mentioned, this discount code will be created per shopping basket. That's why you'll see plenty of them in the Shopify admin > Discounts.

Differences

1- Balancing Reliability and Aesthetic Appeal

The cookie method reliably generates the discount every time. However, the function method may display the discount more effectively on most themes. Therefore, some themes may be better suited for one method over the other. If you are experiencing any issues, contact Support and we will gladly help you out!

2- Function Discount is Less Messy

  • "Function discount" is more pleasant with the display, as there is no random string of numbers attached to it.

  • "Function discount" won't produce a new discount code per shopping basket, whereas a unique discount code is generated for each shopping basket in the Cookie method.

3- Distributing the Bundle Discount when adding a new item

On some themes, in "Function discount" if the customer adds the bundle to the cart and then increases the quantity of one of the bundled items in the cart, the new item that isn't included in that bundle's discount conditions will appear as a new line item without any discount label below it.

In "Cookie discount", if the customer adds the bundle to the cart and then increases the quantity of one of the bundled items in the cart, the new item will appear with the bundled item and will show the discount label. But there would be no new discount applied to this new item. This item will be participated in the discount distribution on the items by Shopify.

4- Buy X get Y

In the "Buy x get y" bundle, with the "Function discount", the bundle discount will be assigned only to the Y item.

In the "Buy x get y" bundle, with the "Cookie discount", the discount will be divided into the bundle items even if the discount type is "Free gift".

In summary, it's up to you which one to choose. If you don't like the current method that is being used in your shop, you can contact Fast Bundle support to change it to another one.
