How we check the people who work through Florence

The checks every Florence worker completes before they can book a single shift.

Written by Stephen Paul

Nobody works a Florence shift without being checked first. This is what that involves.

  • Professional registration: Nurses must be registered with the College of Nurses of Ontario and entitled to practise with no restrictions. We check the register, and we keep checking it, not just once at the start.

  • A Vulnerable Sector Check: A police background check for people who work with vulnerable adults. It brings together a criminal record check, local police records, and a check against a list of people barred from working with vulnerable groups. It must be less than 6 months old when someone joins.

  • Immunization records, including proof of COVID-19 vaccination and TB screening, in line with what the care homes we work with require.

  • Training certificates. Current CPR and First Aid, and any extra training a role needs.

  • References. At least two, with at least one from a healthcare role, covering the clinical experience we ask for. They have to come from a work email address, not a personal one, and they have to match the work history the person gave us.

  • A video interview with our team. A real person, answering in their own words.

  • Proof of identity, address, and eligibility to work in Canada.

  • Experience. One year of hands-on Canadian clinical experience for personal support workers, and nurses.

We keep checking, not just on the way in. Documents have expiry dates and we track them. If something lapses, that worker cannot book shifts until it's back in date. It isn't a warning, it's a block.

Every worker is also rated by the care homes they work at, on punctuality, documentation, safety, effectiveness and care. That record follows them.

If you're a care home, this is why the person who turns up has already been through a full set of checks before you ever see them.

If you're thinking of joining, this is why onboarding takes a little time. It's also why you can walk into a building knowing everyone else went through exactly the same thing.
