Am I employed by Florence, or self-employed?

Your status when you work through Florence, and what it means for you.

Written by Stephen Paul

When you work through Florence you are an independent contractor. You are not an employee of Florence, and you are not an employee of the care home you work at. That's what the Worker Contract you signed during onboarding sets out.

What this means in practice.

You choose your own work. Nobody can make you take a shift, there are no minimum hours, and you can work as much or as little as you like. That's the upside, and it's a real one.

You're paid the rate shown on the shift for the hours you work, with nothing deducted by us.

You are responsible for your own income tax. We don't deduct tax from your pay and we don't remit anything to the CRA for you. That's yours to handle.

This catches people out, so it's worth saying plainly. If you've only ever been an employee before, you're used to tax coming off before you're paid. Here it doesn't. If you don't set anything aside during the year, you may have a bill at the end of it.

How much to set aside depends on your total income, your other work and your circumstances. We can't tell you a number, and you should be wary of anyone who gives you one without knowing your situation.

What we can and can't help with.

We can tell you exactly what we've paid you and when. If you need a record of your earnings or the shifts you've worked, email hello.ca@florenceapp.com and tell us what you need and the dates it should cover.

We can't give you tax advice. Not because we're being unhelpful, but because we're not qualified to and getting it wrong would cost you money. If you're unsure how to handle your taxes, speak to an accountant. Plenty of healthcare workers use one and it's usually money well spent.
