How Can I Get More National Ads?

Short answer: there are a few factors that can increase your likelihood of receiving a national ad

As one of more than 650 Flytedesk member publications, you have Flytedesk's national sales team at your back, pitching your paper to national brands and agencies on your behalf every day. You only need to provide your national rates, and we do the work.

Flytedesk National is a commission-based service - we only make money if we bring you a national ad. That means our team keeps student media at the center of everything we do, working hard to bring you national revenue.

Additionally, you should have control over how you run your business. Our goal is to supplement your advertising office, not replace it. We can keep Flytedesk membership free by promising that money will only ever flow one way (from us to you), while the number of ads or amount of revenue you receive depends on market demand.

Even though Flytedesk sometimes has the liberty to pick and choose which publishers to include on a campaign, in most cases, national buyers make the final call. There are several factors that national buyers look for when building their campaigns, depending on the audience they're trying to target.

Here are a few examples of factors that might affect their decision:

  1. ) Location/market (ex. Boston; West Coast)

  2. ) Enrollment (ex. >5,000 undergrads)

  3. ) Demographic makeup (ex. high diversity; >60% female)

  4. ) Unique major concentration (ex. >30% STEM majors)

  5. ) School type (ex., community colleges; liberal arts colleges)

What can I do to increase my chances of getting a national ad?

While you can't always control all of those market/demographic factors, there are a couple of steps you can take to increase your likelihood of receiving a national ad:

Be a Flytedesk member.

Keep your media kit up-to-date.

It's easier for us to pitch your products to national brands if you provide your most up-to-date rates and publication schedules each semester.

Add unique products and opportunities.

National buyers always ask about unique opportunities, like special print editions (career guides, graduation issues, etc.), website takeovers, and product sampling. The more opportunities in your paper's media kit, the more likely national buyers will show interest.

Stay connected

Keep your contact information up-to-date in your account settings. When an ad is booked, we'll need a good email and phone number to contact! Adding multiple team members and training new sales reps on the platform each year ensures we have many ways to stay in touch with you.

I'm a member, I update my media kit, and I stay connected, but I'm still not getting the number of ads I expected. Am I doing something wrong?

Not at all. We are working hard to bring you as much national revenue as possible, but ultimately the decision about where to advertise lies with our national buyers. (If it were entirely up to us, we would pour money onto all of our members. It makes us happy when we can.)
