How to test drive

This guide will help you learn how to navigate and complete a test drive

Updated over 2 months ago

The test drive is free and takes place in a controlled environment with barriers and numbered cones to help you learn how to safely operate the robot.

Steps on how to test drive

  1. Access the Test Drive

  2. Click “Let’s Go”

    • This opens the test drive setup.

  3. Choose Your Control Method

    • Select game controller, driving wheel, or keyboard.

  4. Click “Start”

    • Begin setting up your controls.

  5. Bind Your Keys

    • Assign controls according to your chosen setup.

  6. Click “Proceed to Drive” (top-right corner).

  7. Accept the Terms of Use

    • Tick the box terms and click Good to Proceed.

  8. Wait for the Bot Feed to Load

    • Normally takes about 15 seconds.

    • If it takes longer, reload your browser.

  9. Adjust Your On-Screen Controls

    • Once your bot feed appears, you’ll see several control icons on the upper-right corner of the screen.

      Upper right:

      • Lights: Turn your bot’s headlights on or off. This helps in dim or shaded areas.

      • Mic: Speak through the bot by turning the microphone on. Make sure your browser allows microphone access.

      • Audio: Turn the speaker on to hear sound from the bot’s surroundings, or off if you prefer silence.

      Lower left:

      • Speed: The number beside “KMH” indicates your current speed level, ranging from 1 to 5.

        • The default speed is 3.

        • To change your speed, use the key or button you set earlier during the key binding step.

        • If you’re using a controller, this may be one of the trigger buttons. If you’re using a keyboard, it depends on what key you assigned.

  10. Start Driving and Scan Checkpoints

    • Once your feed and controls are ready, start driving your bot around the area.

    • Your goal is to find and approach the numbered cones (0–9) and scan at least 7 checkpoints within 15 minutes.

    • When you face a cone directly and the number is visible on your camera, click Scan Checkpoint at the bottom of the screen to register it.

    • If you miss any cones, keep driving around until you spot the next one.

Test Drive Results

If you fail to scan at least 7 checkpoints within 15 minutes, you’ll see a message like the one below. Since the test drive is free, simply click Try Again in the upper-right corner to start another session.

If you successfully scan 7 or more checkpoints, you’ll see the screen below. Click Continue to Open-World Game to access the open-world dashboard.

If you clicked Continue to Open-World Game and were not redirected to the dashboard, you can also access it directly by visiting: https://school.frodobots.com/dashboard/

IMPORTANT: Only users who already have an existing Game Pass can drive the bots stationed in different cities in the open world. Buying a new Game Pass is not available at this time.

If you previously purchased a Game Pass but don’t see it on your dashboard, please contact our support team through the chat widget on the lower right and share the email address used for your purchase.

Helpful Tips

Finding the Cones

If you find it difficult to see the cones during your test drive, that’s normal. The camera on the robot is positioned close to the ground, so your view is limited. You might need to drive around until you spot the tip of a cone. That’s part of the challenge.

There are also two EarthRover models with different camera heights:

  • EarthRover Mini/Mini+ has a lower camera angle, so it’s closer to the ground.

  • EarthRover Zero sits a bit higher, giving you a wider view.

Scanning Cones

  • Position your bot at an optimal distance from the cone. Being neither too close nor too far ensures the cone's number is visible on the camera.

  • Face the cone's number directly to ensure the most straightforward view and avoid potential obstructions hindering visibility.

See the example below.

Low Light Conditions

  • If the environment is dim, switch on the bot's headlights located in the upper left corner.

  • If you fail to scan checkpoints while headlights are on, turn off headlights before clicking Scan checkpoint.

Bot Issues

  • If you encounter delays, simply refresh the tab to get back on track.

  • In case the bot has an issue, go to the Menu on the upper left and click Quit & Abort to end the drive. Then restart your test drive to try with another bot.

After your test drive, you'll gain access to the open-world dashboard. If not redirected automatically, visit👉 https://school.frodobots.com/dashboard/

Notifications During Test Drive

As you navigate your test drive, you may encounter the following notifications or pop-up messages:

Your spot was taken

If you see the message below, it means someone else has connected and taken your spot. Click Return back to dashboard, then Let's GO to be assigned to another available bot.

No test drive bot available

If you see this message No test drive bot available, it means all test drive bots are currently in use or unavailable.

There’s no timer showing when the next bot will be available, as test drive access is first-come, first-served. Try reloading the page every few minutes to catch an available bot as soon as another user finishes their session.

If no bot becomes available after about 30 minutes, you can contact our support team through the chat widget on the lower right, or check back again in a few hours when more bots are free.

Scan completed! [number] more to go!

When you see this message after clicking Scan checkpoints a cone, it means the scan was successful.

The cone you just scanned will automatically be added to your scanned checkpoints list at the bottom of the screen.

Oops! There's a problem with the checkpoint scan. Please redo the scan

If you see the banner “Oops! There’s a problem with the checkpoint scan. Please redo the scan.”, it means the scan was unsuccessful.

This can happen if:

  • The bot is too far or too close to the cone.

  • The cone’s number is not fully visible in the camera frame.

  • The image is blurry or partially obstructed.

The system relies on vision to detect the cone number. If the number isn’t completely visible or clear, the scan won’t be successful.

Try adjusting your bot’s position and scan again once the cone’s number is fully visible on screen.

Looks like you've already visited checkpoint #0 previously

This banner means you have already scanned the cone earlier. Keep driving around and find the cones you haven't scanned to continue your test drive.

Test Drive Guidelines

It is important to follow rules and guidelines to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience. Please read the following terms of use before doing a test drive:

  • Responsible Operation - Operate the bot responsibly. This means being aware of your surroundings and other bots in the area. Please do not intentionally bump into other bots, as this can cause damage and disrupt the experience for others.

  • Completing the Drive - Complete the drive without abandoning your bot. If you are idle for 10-15 minutes, you will be automatically kicked out of the drive. This is to ensure that all participants are actively engaged and to prevent disruptions.

  • Avoid Destructive Behavior - To maintain a safe and enjoyable environment, it is important to avoid any destructive behavior while driving an EarthRover. This includes damaging property, hitting cones and barriers, and intentionally crashing the bot.

If any of the above rules are violated, it may result in being kicked out of the drive or, in severe cases, removal from the entire FrodoBots service, so please adhere to these terms of use when driving a bot.
