Overview
The OpenDental integration is configured under Setup → Integrations → OpenDental. Reach out to GiveMe5 customer support first—they create the key and walk you through setup.
After your key is entered and options are saved, GiveMe5 can receive webhook or scheduled updates from OpenDental (depending on eConnector) and use your chosen trigger events—such as appointment completed—to pull the customer context needed for review invitations.
OpenDental integration: Customer Key, eConnector, and trigger events
From here you can:
Get a Customer Key from GiveMe5 support — required before the integration can work
Choose how OpenDental syncs — eConnector (real-time, recommended) or periodic sync (every 15 minutes when not using eConnector)
Pick trigger events on the integration screen — for example when an appointment is completed
Disconnect or update — return to the same OpenDental panel when your practice changes systems
Before you connect
Requirement | Why it matters |
Admin access in GiveMe5 | Only admins open Setup → Integrations |
GiveMe5 Customer Key | GiveMe5 customer support generates this for your practice—you cannot create it in the Dashboard alone |
OpenDental eConnector(for real-time webhooks) | For webhook-based flows, eConnector must be running at the practice. Most practices that use OpenDental Support already have it installed—see the note on the integration screen |
Correct GiveMe5 location | One integration per practice or brand as you operate |
How to connect OpenDental
Step 1: Contact GiveMe5 customer support for your Customer Key
Open a request with GiveMe5 customer support and ask to enable OpenDental for your practice/location.
Our team generates the Customer Key and guides you through the rest of the setup.
Use Contact Support on the OpenDental integration page if you need help from inside the app.
Step 2: Open Integrations in GiveMe5
Sign in as an Admin.
Open Setup → Integrations.
Select the location for this practice.
Step 3: Open the OpenDental integration
Click OpenDental in the grid.
Read the instructions at the top of the page (they repeat that a Customer Key from GiveMe5 is required).
Step 4: Enter your Customer Key
Paste the Customer Key GiveMe5 support gave you into the Customer Key field.
Do not share this key in public channels or with vendors who do not need it.
Step 5: Set eConnector usage
Under Does your practice use eConnector? choose the option that matches your practice:
Yes (real-time, recommended) — webhooks can fire as events happen in OpenDental. OpenDental eConnector must be running at the practice for webhooks to work.
No (periodic every 15 minutes) — GiveMe5 checks for changes on a schedule instead of live webhooks.
The page also notes that most practices using OpenDental Support already have eConnector installed.
Step 6: Choose trigger events
Under Choose trigger events, select when GiveMe5 should act—for example Appointment Completed—so patient/customer data can flow and review invitations can send according to your Automation rules.
Use only the options shown; your support contact can confirm which events fit your workflow.
Step 7: Save and verify with support if needed
Save or connect using the primary action on the screen.
If the product offers a test step or support asked you to confirm receipt of a test event, complete it together with GiveMe5 support.
Step 8: Spot-check before going live
Trigger a safe test appointment completion (or the event you enabled) and confirm the invitation path in GiveMe5 behaves as expected.
After you connect
Keep eConnector running when you selected Yes—if it stops, real-time triggers will not reach GiveMe5 until it is restored.
Trigger checkboxes on the OpenDental page control which events fire; if invitations stop, verify the right event is still selected.
Rotate or replace the Customer Key only through GiveMe5 support if your security policy requires it—do not try to manufacture a new key locally.
Tips
Treat the Customer Key like a password—store it in your practice’s credential vault.
If you switch from No to Yes for eConnector (or the reverse), confirm timing expectations with GiveMe5 so Automation delays match what staff expect.
Frequently asked questions
Why don’t I have a Customer Key yet?
GiveMe5 creates it for you. Contact GiveMe5 customer support (or use Contact Support on the integration page) so we can provision your practice.
Webhooks never seem to fire.
Confirm you chose Yes for eConnector, that eConnector is actually running on the practice network, and that the chosen trigger event occurred in OpenDental. Send GiveMe5 support timestamps and a short description of what you tested.
Does GiveMe5 store full patient charts?
GiveMe5 stores what your configured workflows need for review outreach—coordinate with GiveMe5 on data minimization and your compliance officer.
Can I disconnect OpenDental?
Yes—open Setup → Integrations → OpenDental and remove the connection or clear the key (wording may vary). Ask GiveMe5 support if you also need the practice key retired on our side.
