The Freight module gives you a comprehensive view of your Freight emissions and a good starting point to tackle emission reduction.

Why consider emissions from Freight?

A large portion of global emissions are due to freight, some estimates attribute 11% of global emissions to freight activities.

Freight transportation, including road, rail, air, and sea, is a major contributor to global GHG emissions. It is responsible for a large share of Scope 3 (indirect emissions), which is often more substantial than Scope 1 and Scope 2. For companies with extensive supply chains or logistics operations, this can represent a significant portion of their overall carbon footprint.

The Freight category has a lot of opportunities for reductions, which you can approach confidently with an overview of your current emissions once the module is completed.

How to fill the module?

To complete the module, go to Data -> Activity overview > Freight and follow the steps below:

  1. Upload your data

    You have two options to upload your data:

    • Manually, on the platform by clicking on "Add data manually"

    • Using the template by clicking on "Import file" at the top of the page.

    Whichever you use, please make sure to fill out the mandatory fields: they come with a red * on the platform and appear in green in the template. The mandatory fields are:

    • The date of shipment;

    • The departure and arrival points (city and country) OR the distance travelled;

    • The type of freight (sea, air, road, rail, inland waterways);

    • The shipment's weight;

    • The vehicle ownership (owned, leased, outsourced);

    • The determining stakeholder (transport provider, retailer, reporting organization, end customer);

    There are also additional data that would help us provide even more accurate results and we highly recommend including them:

    • The shipment description;

    • If it's refrigerated;

    • The type of fuel, etc.

    If you do not have the necessary information, you can click on "Skip the module" at the bottom left of the page.

  2. Review your data

    Firstly, you will be asked to check on the data that you have gathered to make sure there are no mistakes.

    Secondly, if you have already uploaded your accounting file and have been through the categorization, we will offer you the possibility to flag the expenses related to freight. This way, you will ensure that the emissions of activities that appear both on the financial and the activity module will only be counted once (avoiding "double counting").

    Once you flag these activities as duplicated we will take into consideration the activity data for the report, since it is more accurate than the monetary one.

  3. Read your results

    The Results page offers a clear and detailed view of the emissions from your sh You will be able to filter by freight type, transport type, fuel type, and even decision authority (retailer, transport provider, end customer, reporting organization).

    On the Result page, you will also be able to choose the reduction actions related to freight emissions.
