Learn how to send a test email and be aware of certain limitations when sending test emails.

Send a test email

When setting up a scheduled email or campaign, it is a good idea to send a test email(s).

To send a test email, when editing an email in Emails > Scheduled emails or Campaign > Campaigns, click the Send test email button.

Limitations to the Send test email feature

When setting up a scheduled email or campaign, it is a good idea to send a test email(s). To send a test email, when editing the email, click the Send test email button.

However, note that there are some limitations to sending test emails:

Insert content feature does not work in test emails

A test email will not include any data you have added via the Insert content feature.

For example, if you have used the Insert content feature to add data for the guest’s first name, the test email will show the tag only, with no data — ::subscriber.first_name::

This is expected behaviour for a test email; rest assured data will be inserted when it is sent to a guest.

The unsubscribe URL will not appear in test emails

If you have included an unsubscribe URL in an email campaign, it will not appear in a test email. This is expected behaviour for a test email; rest assured the unsubscribe URL will be included when it is sent to a guest.

Refer to this article to learn how to add an unsubscribe link in your email(s).

Test a campaign email

To view a campaign email as a guest would see it, follow these steps:

Add yourself as a subscriber

  1. Go to Campaigns > Subscribers > View subscribers tab > click the Add subscriber button.

  2. Fill in your details (Email address, First name, Last name).

  3. In the Tags field, enter a unique tag such as ‘test’.

  4. Click Save changes.

Add segment

  1. Go to the Segments tab and click the Add segment button:

  2. To create a segment, in the Include tags field, enter the unique tag name you created when you added yourself as a subscriber (e.g. ‘test’).

  3. Click Save changes.

Set up the Segment in the campaign email

Create your campaign email (refer to Create a campaign) then in the Segment tab, select Send it to only a saved segment of my subscribers, and from the drop-down list, select the segment you created in the above steps (e.g. Email testing).

In the Send tab, click Send now to send the campaign email to your chosen segment.

As the email has been set up using a segment (not a test email), your Insert content (tags) feature will be populated and the unsubscribe link will now appear.
