How to upload Facebook direct messages

This article explains how to upload Facebook direct message threads from a completed Meta export using the Hearsay Extractor.

This article shows the steps to upload your Facebook direct messages to your legal team or account holder. We cover how to process your export file, select specific conversations, and complete the upload through the Hearsay Extractor. Use the table of contents below to jump to any step in the process.


Complete these steps before starting

Before beginning your Facebook upload, make sure you’ve completed the following:


Step 1: Open the Hearsay Extractor

Open the Hearsay Extractor application that you downloaded to your computer. Enter the extraction code into the application and click Enter.

Step 2: Select Non-Phone Source

Click Extract from Non-Phone Source.

Step 3: Select the platform

Click Facebook.

Step 4: Click Continue

Click Continue.

Click Continue.

Step 5: Select file to process

Click Browse and select your downloaded Facebook export file.

Once selected, click Open to select the Facebook export file.

Step 6: Confirm file detection

When the file is detected, click Continue.

Step 7: Processing

Wait while the Hearsay Extractor processes your Facebook file. It’s normal for this step to remain at 100% for several minutes.

Step 8: Select Share Type

Click Pick Conversations to choose specific message threads, or click Share all conversations to upload all Facebook direct messages.

Step 9: Search, select, and share

Use the search bar to find specific conversation participants by contact name or keyword(s). Select the threads you want to include, then click Share.

Step 10: Wait for upload to complete

When you see the confirmation screen, your upload is complete. The selected message threads are now available for review in the account holder’s web portal.

If your attorney sent you the extraction code:

You're done. They’ll receive an email once the upload is complete.

  • Wait for their feedback before deleting the extraction backup (unless you want to keep a copy).
