Common problems with the Atlas theme

The issues merchants report most on the Atlas theme, each with its cause and fix.

⚠️ As of February 25, 2026, Atlas no longer generates or imports themes. If you already have the Atlas theme installed, your theme is unaffected and everything in this article still applies. New users can use Atlas to generate pages and import them into any Shopify theme.

The problems merchants report most often on the Atlas theme, each with its likely cause. This is a single article rather than one per symptom because the Atlas theme is no longer supplied to new merchants, and a set of separate articles for a retired theme would crowd search results for everyone else.

In this article:

Atlas features stopped working

Cause: the Atlas extensions are not enabled on the published theme. They are configured per theme, so publishing a theme, restoring a backup, or applying an update can switch them off.

Fix: open your Atlas dashboard and check the Theme extensions card. Atlas Page Builder and Atlas Cart Upsells should show Active, and Atlas Bundler should show Added. Activate anything that is not, and press Save in the theme editor each time.

The store loads slowly

Cause: usually images, apps, or both. Themes rarely cause slowness on their own.

Fix, in order of impact:

  1. Compress your images. Oversized product photos are the most common cause by a wide margin. Aim for well under 200 KB per image.

  2. Remove apps you do not use. Every installed app adds scripts, whether or not you use it.

  3. Reduce sections on your home page. Each section is more to load.

  4. Check third-party embeds, particularly video players and chat widgets.

Test with Google PageSpeed Insights before and after, so you know what actually helped.

ℹ️ Shopify's own speed score is a rough guide and moves for reasons outside your control. Real-world load time on a phone matters more than the number.

The main product photo is wrong

Cause: either the image order in Shopify, or a bundle setting changing it.

Fix:

  1. In Shopify, open the product and drag the image you want first into the first position.

  2. If the image changes when a customer selects a variant inside a bundle, that is the bundle setting Display variant's image as main product image when selected. Turn it off on the bundle's Settings tab.

The sale badge is not showing

Cause: the product has no compare-at price, so there is nothing to mark as reduced.

Fix: in Shopify, open the product, and set a Compare-at price higher than the selling price on each variant. The badge appears once there is a difference to show.

If a bundle is active, also check whether Update theme savings badge is enabled on the bundle, since that changes what the theme displays.

The store does not match the preview

Cause: you are looking at a different theme from the one you edited, or a cached copy.

Fix:

  1. In Online Store, then Themes, confirm which theme is published.

  2. Confirm you edited that theme rather than a duplicate.

  3. Check in a private browser window.

  4. Clear the cache in any speed app you run.

If the page is one Atlas published, see Why does my published page look different from the preview?

Variant swatches look wrong

Cause: usually missing variant images, or a mismatch between your theme's swatch handling and a bundle setting.

Fix:

  1. In Shopify, attach an image to each variant.

  2. If swatches disappear only when a bundle is active, turn off Use native theme swatches on the bundle's Settings tab so Atlas draws them instead.

Something else

Support still covers the Atlas theme for merchants who have it. Start a chat from the bubble in the bottom right of Atlas, or email support@helloatlas.io. Either way, include:

  • your store URL

  • the page URL where the problem appears

  • what you expected and what you see

  • a screenshot

  • whether it happens on mobile, desktop, or both

ℹ️ The Atlas theme is no longer updated, so a fix may be a workaround or a recommendation rather than a change to the theme itself. If a problem cannot be resolved within the theme, support can advise on moving to a current theme, which does not affect anything Atlas does.
