Why are my visitor counts lower in Atlas than in Shopify?

Atlas counts visitors with its own tracking, which ad blockers can block and which only runs on pages Atlas published. Shopify counts every visitor to your store.

Atlas will usually report fewer visitors than Shopify, for two reasons: Atlas only counts visitors to the pages it published, and some visitors run ad blockers that prevent Atlas from counting them at all. Shopify counts every visitor to every page of your store. A gap between the two is normal. A gap of zero would be surprising.

In this article:

Reason one: Atlas only counts its own pages

Shopify's analytics cover your whole store: home page, collection pages, blog posts, cart, checkout, and every product page whether Atlas built it or not.

Atlas counts visitors to the pages Atlas published. A visitor who lands on your collection page, browses two products Atlas did not build, and leaves is a visitor in Shopify and not a visitor in Atlas.

If you have published two Atlas pages and have forty product pages in total, expect Atlas visitor counts to be a small fraction of Shopify's.

Reason two: ad blockers

Atlas counts a page view by sending a small request from the page to Atlas. Some browser extensions and privacy tools block requests like these, which means the visit happens but Atlas never hears about it.

Atlas changed the address of that request specifically to reduce this, because the earlier address contained a word that common blocklists match on. Pages published more recently are counted more reliably than pages published a long time ago.

💡 If an older page shows suspiciously few visitors, use Publish again on that row. Re-publishing moves the page onto the current version of the Atlas page builder assets, which includes the more reliable tracking.

How to tell which one you are hitting

  1. Open your dashboard and note the visitor count for one specific Atlas page.

  2. In your Shopify admin, open Analytics, then Reports, and find sessions for that same page URL over the same dates.

  3. Compare.

What you see

Likely cause

Atlas is somewhat lower, for example 70 to 90 percent of Shopify

Normal ad blocker loss

Atlas is far lower, for example under half

An older page. Try Publish again.

Atlas shows zero, Shopify shows traffic

The Atlas Page Builder app embed may be off, or the page is not the one receiving traffic

What this affects, and what it does not

Affected: the Visitors, Conv.% and Rev/visitor columns on your pages, and Revenue per visitor on the dashboard. Where the visitor count is understated, revenue per visitor is overstated by the same proportion.

Not affected: your bill. Published pages are counted when you publish them, not when someone visits. Visitor tracking has no effect on what you pay.

Not affected: bundle and cart drawer impressions, which are counted separately when the offer itself renders.

If Atlas shows no visitors at all

Zero visitors on a page that is definitely receiving traffic usually means the page is not running Atlas at all.

  1. Check the Theme extensions card on your dashboard. Atlas Page Builder must show Active on your published theme.

  2. Confirm the page was published to the theme that is actually live. A page published to a non-live theme receives no traffic.

  3. Open the page on your storefront and confirm it is the Atlas version rather than your theme's original.

If all three check out and the count is still zero after a day, contact support from the chat bubble in Atlas, or at support@helloatlas.io, with the page URL and the dates you are comparing.
