What project settings control

Upload the customer research Atlas writes from, choose how closely it follows that research, and keep a library of personas and angles to reuse.

Written by Eddie Lavandera

Project settings is where you give Atlas the raw material it writes from. It holds three things: the customer research documents, a choice about how closely Atlas should follow them, and a library of saved personas and angles. Fill it in once and every page you build inside that project gets better.

To reach it, select a project in the dashboard rail, then open the Project settings tab. With no project yet, the tab shows Create a project to configure its settings. and a + Create project button.

In this article:

Customer research

Heading Customer research, described in its tooltip as research that helps Atlas "understand your customer persona, what they want, their objections".

Select Upload research files. Atlas analyses each one, showing Analyzing your document… and then Helping shape customer segments and ad angles once it is ready.

There is a second slot, Style reference, for examples of your own writing. Its caption is Shaping voice and tone: upload examples so Atlas can match your writing style. Research shapes what Atlas says; a style reference shapes how it says it.

Use Replace to swap a file and Remove to delete one. Removing asks Remove this research? and warns that it cannot be undone. If several files are uploaded, removing one prompts {name} will be removed from your customer research. The remaining files will be re-analyzed.

A file Atlas cannot read shows Couldn't process this file, with the advice to re-save it from Word, Pages or Google Docs and upload it again.

Full detail on accepted types and sizes is in Uploading customer research and style references.

How should we use these documents?

Directly under the research, Atlas asks How should we use these documents? The tooltip is the clearest statement of what you are choosing: "Choose how closely Atlas follows your uploaded research."

Two options:

Option

What Atlas does

Stick closely to my angles and personas

Keeps the angles and personas from your research as-is and writes the page copy around them

Use as inspiration

Treats your research as guidance, and can adjust the angles and personas it generates

💡 Pick Stick closely to my angles and personas when your research already contains the positioning you want, for example a brief you wrote yourself or a persona document from your agency. Pick Use as inspiration when you are uploading raw material like reviews or survey responses and you want Atlas to find the pattern in it.

Saved personas

Heading Saved personas: personas and angles saved from the angle wizard, plus any you write yourself. Reuse them when building pages so your avatar never drifts between tests.

This is the reusable output of your work. Empty to begin with: No saved personas yet. Save one from the angle wizard, or add your own.

Each persona has a name, a description and one or more angles. Select Add persona to write one yourself, which Atlas marks Written by you:

  • Persona name, for example "The event-ready woman"

  • Description: who is this customer, what do they want, and what holds them back

  • Angles, each with an Angle title and a Hook. Atlas explains the relationship: Each angle is a way this page can sell to the persona — a title plus the hook line the copy leads with.

Use Edit to change one, Show all to expand a long list, and Delete to remove one. Deleting asks Delete {title} from this project? and confirms that "Pages already built with it are unaffected".

ℹ️ These are personas here and audiences in the angle wizard. They are the same thing, and one saved in the wizard appears in this list.

Renaming and deleting the project

The Actions menu at the top of the tab has two items: Rename project and Delete project.

⚠️ Deleting a project removes the project and everything filed under it from Atlas. Pages you have already published stay in your theme and keep working, as long as your subscription is active. See Creating and managing projects for exactly what is and is not removed.

Saving your changes

The research upload and the saved persona library save themselves as you go. The How should we use these documents? choice uses Shopify's save bar, which appears at the top of the screen when you have unsaved changes, with Save and Discard.

Saving confirms with Settings saved. A failure shows Couldn't save settings. Try again.

What project settings do not control

  • There is no colour palette setting. Colours are set per page in the Atlas editor. See Editing your page in the Atlas editor.

  • There is no free-text brand voice or constraints field. Voice comes from your style reference, and positioning comes from your research and saved personas.

  • There is no per-project language setting. Language is chosen in each build flow.
