Overview
Understanding equipment efficiency requires breaking down raw operational hours into discrete work spans and movement trips. A machine running for 8 hours may consist of active material hauling, short repositioning trips, or extended idling at queue points.
The Trip & Work Span Analysis workflow in 4D Viewer allows supervisors to interactively inspect asset timelines, scrub historical movement paths, analyze segment metrics (distance, duration, average speed, and safety alarm counts), lock target workspans using Investigation Mode, and pinpoint operational bottlenecks.
Prerequisites
Before starting this workflow, ensure you have:
Authenticated and logged into the SensGrid platform.
Loaded a project in 4D Viewer with tracked mobile assets (e.g., loaders, haul trucks, excavators).
Workflow Sequence:
Select Asset: Click a mobile equipment item from the map or Devices list.
Enable Trajectory Overlays: Open Display Options (Eye icon) and turn on Movement Paths.
Navigate Timeline Workspans: Scrub the timeline playhead, view color-coded zone workspans, and use
Ctrl+ Click to activate Workspan Investigation Mode.Inspect Segment Metrics: Review total journey distance, runtime, start/end timestamps, and specific event alerts in the Selection Inspector.
Focus 3D Camera: Focus the 3D camera directly onto the spatial trajectory path of the selected workspan.
1. Select Asset and Enable Trajectory Overlays
Focus the 4D Viewer on the target equipment item:
Open the Devices panel on the left work panel.
Search and select your target asset (e.g., CAT 980 Wheel Loader).
Click the Eye icon (Map Overlay Options) or use the Device State Bar and ensure Movement Paths (Instrument Trajectories) are turned ON.
Set the path duration window (That Hour, That Day, or custom date range) from the Device State Bar.
The 3D view canvas renders color-coded spatial path vectors representing vehicle movement across the site.
2. Navigate Work Spans on the Interactive Timeline
Examine temporal activity distribution across the shift:
Expand the bottom Timeline Panel.
Observe the timeline track for the selected asset, which visualises:
Work Spans: Solid color-coded blocks indicating active equipment operation within site zones.
Idle / Stationary Intervals: Open gaps between work spans.
Current Datum: Green highlight indicator showing the active telemetry frame timestamp (with dimmed/amber outline when active).
Alarm Markers: Red/amber indicator flags along the timeline showing safety or threshold events.
Drag the time slider or click specific timeline segments to scrub playback to that precise moment.
Workspan Investigation Mode: Hold
Ctrl+ Click a workspan segment to lock it into Investigation Mode for focused telemetry analysis. Click empty space to clear investigation mode.
3. Click and Inspect Segment Detail Cards
Examine quantitative statistics for selected trip segments in the Selection Inspector:

Ctrl+ Click) directly on a trip or work span block on the timeline track, or select the Workspans tab in the Selection Inspector.The Selection Inspector updates to display the Trip & Work Span Details:
Total Journey Distance: Summary header displaying cumulative distance travelled (km) across all segments for the selected period.
Total Runtime: Cumulative operating duration (hours & minutes) across active workspans.
Journey From / To Timestamps: Localized start and end times for the selected trip span.
Segment Start & End Time: Localized timestamps for the start and finish of individual workspan segments.
Distance Travelled & Speed: Movement distance and calculated velocity (km/h).
Alerts & Events Summary: Clickable event pills (e.g. End of Trip, Harsh Braking, Hard Cornering) to jump playback directly to exact event timestamps.
4. Focus 3D Camera on Workspan Trajectory
Center the map canvas on the exact spatial path of the selected workspan:
In the Selection Inspector, locate your target workspan segment.
Click the Focus Path button (or double-click the workspan item).
The 4D Viewer automatically calculates the spatial bounding box of the movement path and flies the 3D camera to frame the trajectory in the viewport.
5. Identify Site Bottlenecks and Operational Gaps
Utilize trip metrics to resolve logistics delays:
Identify work spans exhibiting short distance covered despite long duration (indicating extended queuing at loading or dumping points).
Compare trip segment timelines between multiple haul units to identify unequal cycle distribution or loader queue delays.
Save the view state or capture timeline statistics to discuss shift adjustments during supervisor briefings.
