User Flow: Device Fleet Tracking and Historical Path Playback

Learn how to search deployed telemetry devices, focus the 3D camera on specific assets, configure 3D models and movement path overlays, and play back historical vehicle trajectory trails.

Overview

Construction sites host diverse telemetry devices, including fixed environmental monitors, structural sensors, mobile plant trackers, haul truck IVMS units, and wearable tags.

The 4D Viewer allows operational teams to track the locations of these assets in real time, view historical movement trails across site roads, and play back device telemetry over time to analyze equipment utilisation and site logistics.

Prerequisites

Before starting this workflow, ensure you have:

  • Authenticated and logged into the SensGrid platform.

  • Loaded a project in the 4D Viewer containing connected telemetry devices or tracking nodes.

Workflow Sequence:

  1. Filter Devices: Search assets, or toggle device states (Active, Filtered, Inactive) using the top Device State Bar.

  2. Focus Camera: Double-click the target device card to fly the 3D camera to its location.

  3. Enable Overlays & Timeframe: Open Display Options (Eye icon) and configure Labels, 3D Models, and Movement Path duration (e.g., That Hour, That Day).

  4. Playback: Click Play or scrub the Devices Timeline to animate historical trajectory paths.

1. Search and Filter Deployed Devices

Locate specific devices or asset types in the project:

  1. Open the Devices (Instruments) panel from the left Work Panel.

  2. Filter or search the list:

    • Search Bar: Type a plant number, registration number, equipment model, site name, or custom note.

    • Device State Bar: Toggle overall device visibility states (Active, Filtered, Inactive) at the top of the viewer canvas.

    • Device Type Filter: Filter by category (e.g., Inclinometers, GPS Trackers, Haul Trucks).

    • Sort Dropdown: Sort the list by Name or Device Type.

2. Focus the 3D Camera on Selected Assets

Pinpoint the location of an asset in 3D space:

  1. Locate your target device card in the Devices list.

  2. Double-click the device card.

  3. The 4D Viewer will automatically orient and fly the 3D camera to center directly on the asset's latitude, longitude, and elevation coordinates.

  4. Single-click the card to select it. The asset will highlight, and the Selection Inspector on the right side of the screen will display full device metadata, current datum status, and real-time telemetry charts.

3. Configure Display and Path Overlays

Customize how devices and historical paths render on the map:

  1. Click the Eye Icon (Display Options button) or use the Device State Bar.

  2. Configure device rendering options:

    • Labels: Toggle floating text labels above device markers (shows filter icons when in a filtered state).

    • Models: Toggle custom 3D mesh models representing heavy machinery.

    • Movement Paths: Enable breadcrumb trajectory lines and select path duration (That Hour, That Day, or custom window) directly from the Device State Bar.

  3. Close the dialog. Path lines and 3D vehicle models will render directly over the terrain.

4. Play Back Historical Movement Trails

Animate asset movement across the site over time:

  1. Open the Devices Timeline panel from the left Work Panel.

  2. Set the Start Date and End Date inputs to cover your historical analysis window (e.g., yesterday's shift).

  3. Select your desired playback speed using the speed buttons (S, MI, H, D, W):

    • Use MI (Minutes) or H (Hours) for smooth asset movement animations across site roads.

  4. Click the Play button.

  5. As the timeline playhead advances:

    • 3D vehicle models and markers move along their recorded GPS trajectories.

    • Sensor telemetry values in the Selection Inspector update dynamically in sync with the timestamp.

  6. Floating Minimal Mode: Click Minimise in the top-right corner of the timeline panel to shrink the timeline into a compact floating bar at the bottom-left of the map, freeing up screen real estate for immersive 3D viewing.

Tip: To isolate a specific fleet of vehicles (e.g., all water trucks), select them in the Devices list using Ctrl + Click, then click Hide Deselected on the map overlay bar. This hides all other assets on site so you can focus exclusively on your target fleet's movement paths.
