Create a WhatsApp campaign

Written by Benjamin Havenaar

Send a WhatsApp Business message to a group of contacts using an approved template.

Before you start

Be sure to have completed the following steps:

  1. Connect WhatsApp Business under Settings > Integrations if you haven't already.

  2. Make sure you have at least one APPROVED WhatsApp template (see "Manage email and WhatsApp templates")

  3. Make sure the contacts you want to reach have given WhatsApp consent

Step 1: Start a new WhatsApp campaign

Go to Campaigns in the left sidebar, click Create Campaign, and choose WhatsApp.

Step 2: Name your campaign

Give the campaign an internal name so you can find it later.

Step 3: Choose a sender

In the Sender step, select the WhatsApp Business phone number to send from under Choose sender.

Step 4: Choose recipients

In the Send to step, select the segments, tags, or contacts who should receive the message. This is a required field, so you need at least one segment, tag, or contact selected to continue.

Consent types

The "Has consent for" filters your audience to contacts with matching consent status. You can change it to a different or additional consent type, or remove the filter entirely for campaigns that don't require consent, like announcements or event info. Removing the filter should stay exceptional, though, as doing it regularly hurts sender reputation and open rates. Check out this article on how to manage consents while sending out a campaign.

Step 5: Choose a message template

In the Message step, choose an existing approved template or create a new one. Because WhatsApp requires Meta's approval for business-initiated messages, you can't write free-form text while setting up a campaign.

Step 6: preview and send a test message

Before finalizing the campaign, it's always useful to check the preview and send a test message to yourself or all relevant colleagues. To do this, click on Preview and test.

From there, you get an expanded view of the preview. Click on the Send test WhatsApp button to send out a test version of the campaign.

From there, select a user via the dashboard or add a custom receipient of you want to share it with someone without adding them as a user to the dashboard.

Step 7: Schedule, send, or save as a draft

In the Schedule step, choose Send now or Schedule for a later date and time. You can also save the campaign as a draft via the button on the top right.
