If you're reading this article, it's likely you already know what SCORM is, but just in case here's a quick overview.

What is SCORM?

SCORM stands for Shareable Content Object Reference Model and is a collection of standards and specifications for web-based e-learning tools. It defines and enables communications between systems, often transferring data to a learning management system. SCORM also defines how content may be packaged into a transferable ZIP file. Products such as Articulate and Storyline allow you to export your content as SCORM packages.

Why embed a SCORM package?

A very good question and one we recommend you think carefully about before you decide to do it. iQualify has a range of rich and engaging task types and where possible we'd suggest using these in your courses instead.

Tasks have been designed with the learner in mind. They allow for small engaging interactive tasks that give instant and/or personalised feedback. They also allow for gathering rich data insights. Potentially embedding a SCORM content package could be quite a jarring experience for learners with large chunks of content or even whole courses being embedded on one page. It could also provide you with minimal information on what your learners are doing beyond a simple complete/incomplete status.

Given all that, we do understand that sometimes significant time and resources may have gone into developing resources outside of iQualify. Embedding them can be a good interim step to modernising your legacy content.

How an account owner connects a SCORM Cloud account

To enable your authors to embed SCORM packages first you need to create a SCORM Cloud account and then connect it to your iQualify account.

Once you have created your account:

  1. Select your Avatar and choose iQualify Settings.

  2. On the menu on the left-hand side, select Integrations.

  3. Make sure you're in Apps.

  4. Select the SCORM Cloud icon.

  5. Toggle to On to enable hosting and playing of SCORM packages from your own SCORM Cloud subscription.

  6. Fill in the App ID and Secret key credentials from your SCORM Cloud account.
For instructions, see How To Find Your AppID, Secret Key And XAPI Endpoint URL In SCORM Cloud.

  7. Select Save and then Update.

To remove SCORM, toggle to Off.  This will disconnect your SCORM Cloud account and remove SCORM content from any class activations.

How an author can embed a SCORM package

  1. When editing a page in a course, select the + and choose Embed, then SCORM.

  2. Add your Title.

  3. Use Choose file to upload your SCORM content package.

  4. Use the toggle to determine if this item should show in a learner's non-assessed task list.
If set to On and the SCORM package is set up to send completion data, the SCORM package will show in the learner's task list and the status (Complete/Not complete) will be kept up to date. The status of the completion will also show in the Class Console for facilitators, but facilitators are not able to give feedback on them.

  5. You also have the option to add in an introduction to your content.

  6. When you're ready, Save and see your SCORM package in the page.

Note: If the SCORM package can't send completion data, we recommend that it's not added to the task list and the toggle remains Off. Adding it to the tasks list will mean learners can never reach 100% progress as the package can never be completed. This can impact the awarding of badges where they are set up to automatically award based on 100% completion.

Troubleshooting

Embedding content requires an active SCORM Cloud account.  This message will be displayed if one is not connected.
This item is currently unavailable, and requires an active ScormCloud account for your organisation.
If this happens you need to contact your Account owner.

If an Account owner disconnects the SCORM Cloud account after content has been embedded these items will be removed from any active courses and learners will see the following message.
This item is currently unavailable, and requires an active ScormCloud account for your organisation

While uploading the SCORM file if this message appears MissingKeyMissingKey-Pair-Id query parameter or cookie value, this means that your browser is blocking the SCORM files.
To resolve this you need to allow pop-up windows and third-party cookies, check out this link for more information on Missing Key-Pair Troubleshooting Guide.
