If you are reading this article we guess it is likely you already know what SCORM is but just in case here's a quick overview.

What is SCORM?

SCORM stands for Shareable Content Object Reference Model and is a collection of standards and specifications for web-based e-learning tools. It defines and enables communications between systems, often transferring data to a learning management system. SCORM also defines how content may be packaged into a transferable ZIP file. Products such as Articulate and Storyline allow you to export your content as SCORM packages.

Why embed a SCORM package?

A very good question and one we recommend you think carefully about before you decide to do it. iQualify has a range of rich and engaging task types and where possible we'd suggest using these in your courses instead. Tasks have been designed with the learner in mind. They allow for small engaging interactive tasks that give instant or personalised feedback. They also give the opportunity to gather rich data insights. Potentially embedding a SCORM content package could be quite a jarring experience for learners with large chunks of content or even whole courses being embedded on one page. It could also provide you with minimal information on what your learners are doing past a simple complete/incomplete status.

Given all that, we do understand that sometimes significant time and resource may have gone into developing resources outside of iQualify. Embedding them can be a good interim step to modernising your legacy content.

How an account owner connects a SCORM Cloud account

To enable your authors to embed SCORM packages first you need to create a SCORM Cloud account and then connect it to your iQualify account.

Once you have created your account:

  • Click on your avatar and select iQualify Settings

  • Open the iQualify Settings menu on the left-hand side

  • Select Integrations

  • Select the SCORM Cloud icon

  • Fill in the credentials from your SCORM Cloud account.  Check out this link for more information on How To Find Your AppID, Secret Key And XAPI Endpoint URL In SCORM Cloud

  • Toggle to ON.  This will enable hosting and playing of SCORM packages from your own SCORM Cloud subscription.

  • Select Save and then Update

If needed you can toggle to OFF later.  Please note that this will disconnect your SCORM Cloud account  and  remove the SCORM content from any live activations.

How an author can embed a SCORM package

This option is available in Task courses. SCORM packages can't be embedded into legacy courses.

Once you have navigated to the page and place you want to embed the SCORM package:

  • Click on the + menu

  • Select Embed.  Select Scorm from the dropdown list

  • Enter a Title

  • Upload your SCORM content package

  • Use the toggle to determine if this item should show up in the task list. The default is set to OFF.  If set to ON and this SCORM package is set up to send completion data this will be shown in the learner's Tasks list and the status will be kept up to date.

  • You also have the option to add in an introduction to your content.

  • Click Save

Troubleshooting

If authors choose to embed a SCORM package that can't be completed we would recommend that this isn't added to the task list and the toggle remains OFF. Adding this to the tasks list will mean learners can't get to 100% as this can never be completed. This can impact awarding of badges where they are set up to automatically award based on 100% completion.

SCORM content that is added to a learner's tasks list and a facilitator's Marking list will appear under non-assessed tasks with a status of Completed or Not Submitted. Facilitators are not able to give feedback on them.

Embedding content requires an active SCORM Cloud account.  This message will be displayed if one is not connected.
This item is currently unavailable, and requires an active ScormCloud account for your organisation.
If this happens you need to contact your Account owner.

If an Account owner disconnects the SCORM Cloud account after content has been embedded these items will be removed from any active courses and learners will see the following message.
`This item is currently unavailable, and requires an active ScormCloud account for your organisation
