Facilitators can reopen or reset a learner's task submission, but what's the difference?

Facilitators can reopen or reset a learner's task depending on whether the task submission has been marked or not.

  1. Reopen a task before you have marked it: This allows you to give the learner a chance to revise their submission, for instance, if they've contacted you about uploading the wrong file.

  2. Reset a task after you have marked it: This provides the learner with a completely separate attempt at the same task, while retaining their first attempt for your records. This option is useful if a learner missed elements of the task and needs to try again.

The video below gives an explanation of the difference between re-open and reset and what happens to the learner's attempts.

Overview of reopening a task

When a learner has submitted a manually marked task and it has not been marked yet, facilitators have the option to Reopen before marking the submission.

Reopening a submission:

  • Returns the submission to draft state (all files are retained).

  • Removes the submission from the marking view because it is no longer ready for marking.

  • Notifies learners in app (and email if subscribed for updates) that the task has been reopened.

  • Lets learners update their existing submission.

Uploaded files are retained in the learner's view, allowing them to review, edit, remove, or add to their submissions before resubmitting. These files are no longer visible in the marking modal.

The learner's submission reverts to Not started when reopening is successful.

When a learner has submitted an assessed task and it has been marked (automatically or manually), facilitators can Reset the submission.

Resetting a submission:

  • Notifies the learner the task has been reset via in-app notification (and via email if subscribed to email updates).

  • Gives the learner a completely new attempt.

  • Retains the original submission in the marking view.

A record of all past submissions are retained and visible to both learners and facilitators.
