What is MCC?

Multi-currency conversion allows customers the choice to pay in their home currency or your store currency, based on real-time exchange rates and fees. This feature is especially useful for international customers.

When choosing to pay in their home currency you will not receive funds in that currency. Instead, the payment is converted and settled in the your designated settlement currency, ensuring consistency and simplifying accounting and reconciliation.

As an added benefit, when a customer chooses to pay in their home currency, Kody will offer a rebate of up to 0.5% on the transaction amount. This incentive helps merchants increase conversion rates while earning additional value on international sales.

How can my customer use MCC?

When your customer presents an international Visa, Mastercard, or American Express, the Kody Terminal will prioritise displaying the total amount in their home currency. However, customers can still choose to pay in another currency.

You can present the terminal screen to your customer so that they can then choose their preferred payment currency.

Note: MCC is only available for Visa, Mastercard and American Express customers now

If they choose to pay in their home currency, the total sale amount in both the store's currency and their home currency will appear on both the merchant's and customer's receipts.

How can I check that MCC has been used on a payment?

MCC transactions will be clearly marked with an MCC tag in Kody Universe > Sales tab, so you can easily track which payments were processed using multi-currency conversion.

When will I receive the MCC rebate?

You will receive the rebate at the end of each month, and it will be reflected on your monthly invoice.

How will refunds be handled when MCC is used?

If you process a refund for an MCC transaction:

  • You’ll submit the refund in GBP as usual (standard refund fees apply).

  • The MCC rebate amount will be deducted from your invoice accordingly.

  • Your customer will receive the refund in their home currency, subject to foreign exchange fluctuations.

Why does my customer’s banking app show two amounts?

If a customer is using an international card and chooses to pay in their home currency, their bank may display two amounts on their account temporarily. This doesn’t mean they’ve been charged twice — the first one is just a temporary hold placed for security when the payment begins. Once the final charge in their chosen currency goes through, that first amount will be canceled automatically.

You can reassure customers that their receipt shows the only amount they will actually pay.

What if the foreign‑currency payment is declined?

Should the attempt to charge the card in the customer’s currency fail for any reason, we simply complete the transaction in the store currency. The receipt will reflect the store‑currency amount. There is no need to restart the sale.

How will I receive the payment if the customer chooses to pay in their own currency?

You’ll always receive the payment in your usual shop currency, even if the customer chooses to pay in their home currency.

Kody handles the currency conversion behind the scenes — there’s nothing you need to do. The full amount is paid out to you just like any other transaction, and your MCC rebate (if applicable) is also settled in your store currency.

Can I edit the card types that we offer the customer on the terminal?

Yes, if you contact the Kody team we can help you customise these options
