Maytag: Gen2 Serial

Installation guide for Maytag: Gen 2 Serial machines

K
Written by Kurt Bernhard

Maytag Gen2 machines are those with "PR" or "PD" in the model number, such as MDE22PRBZW or MFR80PD. Primus Washers also use Gen2 serial controls.

The known exceptions are MLG3xPD and MLG4xPD stack Dryers, which use Gen1 (non serial) controls.

Required Parts

  • Card Reader Kit

  • Card Reader Wiring Harness (02-06-48 or 02-06-38)
    02-06-48:

    02-06-38:

The 02-06-38 wiring harness uses a similar looking 6-PIN connector on both the Card Reader side, and the machine side.

Ensure to connect the side to the Card reader that's labelled "Reader"

This will be the translucent connector. Connect the solid-colored connector the machine. This is shown below:

Do NOT mix up the sides as this can damage the machine!

Installation Steps

Step 1: Turn Machine Power Off

It is always recommended to power the machine off before install the card readers.

Step 2: Remove Coin Drop (Card Only Installs)

If you're doing a Hybrid Coin+Card Installation, skip this step.

For Card Only installs, the Card Reader will be mounted in the area where the Coin Drop has been removed.

Step 3: Number the Card Reader using the reader's DIP switches:

Review our: Reader DIP Switch settings article for details on how to set the Card Reader's Machine Type, and Reader Number.

You need to do this BEFORE mounting the Card Readers onto the machines, as accessing the back of the card reader is required.

Step 4: Card Reader Start Signal Connection

Connect the machine side cable to the AA3 connector on the machine's control board:

Step 5: Machine Side Settings - Enabling the Correct Communication Mode

This will be Enhanced Debit mode (for Card ONLY installs), and Coin & Card mode (for Hybrid Coin+Card installs).

The machine will usually automatically enable Enhanced Debit mode once it detects a card reader is attached, but may need to be set manually on MFRxxPD model machines

Card Only Installations (click to expand)

The Card Reader's use Serial communication for Card Only installs.

On most Maytag machines, the machine will automatically detect the Serial reader and enter enhanced debit mode when powered up.

However in some cases (MFRxxPD known to be the only one so far), you will likely need to manually switch the machine into Enhanced Debit using the machine's programming menu:

If your Maytag machine is not the type where setting Enhanced Debit mode need to be done manually, move on to Activating the Card Reader, as that should trigger the machine to automatically switch into Enhanced Debit mode.

For Hybrid Coin+Card Installations (click to expand)

Card Readers setup for Hybrid installs do NOT using Serial communication (they use Pulse communication), so the machine should NOT enter "Enh. Debit" mode automatically, and should NOT be put into Enh. Debit mode manually.

Instead of switching the machine to "Enh. Debit" mode, you'll instead set the machine's Coin/Debit setting to "Coin & Card":

This will allow both the Coin Drop, and Card Reader, to send pulses to the machine to trigger it to start.

By default, the machine's Coin Drop is usually connected to the Coin1 input on the machine.

Coin1's input is controlled by the "Value of Coin 1" setting, in the machine's programming menu, but the "Value of Coin 1" setting also controls how much comes off the vend price, when the machine gets a signal from Coin1 input, as well as the signal it gets from the machine's serial port when a Card Reader is connected to.

This has the affect of only taking $0.25 off the machine's vend price, when the Card Reader sends it's starting pulse.

There are 2 ways to get both the Card Reader and Coin Drop working with the machine:

Option 1 - Move the Coin Drop to Coin 2 Input (click to expand)

When our card reader is used in a Hybrid install configuration, the "Value of Coin 1" setting can be changed to equal the full vend price of the machine, in order to get the card reader to trigger the machine to start when the Card Reader is only sending 1 pulse to the machine (which is what it does by default).

However, the "Value of Coin 1" setting controls the Coin 1 input, as well as the serial input the card reader is using;

so in order to get both the card reader, and Coin Drop, working correctly in a Hybrid configuration, you would need to connect the Coin Drop to Coin2's Input, so that you can set the "Value of Coin 2" setting to equal $0.25 so the Coin Drop continues to work as intended;

then you would set the "Value of Coin 1" setting to equal the full vend price of the machine, so that 1 tap of a laundry card satisfies the full vend price, and triggers the machine to start.

Option 2 - Configure the Card Reader to send Multiple Pulses (click to expand)

The other option would be to use a different Card Reader Control Type, so that the Card Reader can be programmed to send multiple pulses to satisfy the vend price.

We can update the Card Reader's firmware, and use our "Quarter Multi-Pulse, No Busy [14]" Control Type in order to program the reader to send 1 pulse per quarter needed to satisfy the vend price.

To enable this type of configuration, contact the Laundroworks support team, as we'll need to update the Card Reader's firmware, and set an internal tuning parameter setting to ensure the Card Reader's pulses are 24ms so the machine can register the multiple pulses it receives from the Card Reader.

Below is an example of what the reader settings look like when using a Multi-Pulse control type for this type of configuration:

Step 6: Activate the Card Reader

Proceed to secure the reader into the place where the Coin drop was removed and power ON the machine.

Then Activate the card reader using the Activation Card for this specific location:

Note: you MUST use the Activation Card for THIS SPECIFIC LOCATION,
or else the card reader will not appear on the LaundroPortal for this location.

This will activate the reader and programs the reader with the location's specific Support and Location IDs.

The Card Reader will then automatically connect to VAC01's wireless network and once connected, will be visible on the LaundroPortal where you can configure it's vend prices.

Setting Vend Pricing

For Serial Communication (Card Only Install) (click to expand)

The Card Reader does NOT control pricing.

Vend pricing needs to be configured on the machine directly, and the machine updates the Card Reader with the correct prices for each cycle option.

Multi-vend pricing levels is supported with Serial communication

For Pulse Communication (Hybrid Coin+Card Install) (click to expand)

Setting the vend price of the Card Reader is done via the LaundroPortal. This controls pricing charged to Laundry Cards tapped to the Card Readers.

The Card Reader will NOT update the price being displayed on the machine's display, so pricing will need to be configured via the LaundroPortal (for the Card Reader) AND on the machine so that the machine's display matches what the Card Reader is charging.

With Pulse communication, the Card Reader has no way of knowing what cycle option is being selected, so Multi-vend pricing levels is NOT supported, all cycle options need to be priced the same.

When using the default Card Reader Control Type, the reader only sends 1 pulse (1 "coin") to the machine for payment, so the machine needs to be configured to start from 1 pulse. This means either changing the machine's Coin Value setting to equal the full vend price; or changing the machine's vend price to equal $0.25 (which is what the Coin Value setting is normally set to by default).

If using a Multi-Pulse control type, then the card reader sends multiple pulses (1 per each $0.25 needed to satisfy the vend price), so the Coin Value setting on the machine should remain at $0.25.

Regardless of the type of configuration you're using, while it is not strictly required, it is still strongly recommended that you create custom Machine Groups via the LaundroPortal (e.g. 60lb Washers, 50lb Dryers, etc.)

This will allow the LaundroPortal's reports to show statistics based on specific groups/sizes of machines.

Troubleshooting

Below are problems commonly encountered during installation of readers on these machines.

For more general card reader troubleshooting, see the Card Reader Troubleshoot section of our Help Center.

Issue

Explanation and resolution

Reader not powering up

If using wiring harness part #: 02-06-38

Confirm you haven't mixed up the 2 6-PIN connectors:

Reader says "No Comm with machine"

There's no Serial communication between the Card Reader and the machine control board.

Ensure you're on Enhanced Debit mode if dealing with an older machine.

On MYR/MYS models, if you're not seeing error code D16 on the washing machine, then it is NOT on debit (Serial) mode.
