Understanding Tokens and Token Costs in Leonardo.Ai
Tokens are the currency used in Leonardo.Ai to pay for almost everything you do on the platform.
It’s important to note that each feature, image and video model has its own unique token cost, based on the complexity and computing power required. Beyond this, token cost may vary based on the number of reference images used, settings, image size, number of images being generated, etc.
Before generating, you will see how many Tokens an action costs, generally on the button itself.
Note that Free users get 150 daily tokens.
Keeping track of your Tokens
You can keep track of how many Tokens you have in a few places, including;
At the centre or top right of the page when using certain tools
On the bottom left of the home page, the token count displays above your user profile (A).
Hover over the token count anywhere on the platform for a breakdown of your plan and remaining tokens, including;
Fast tokens (B). The number of monthly tokens included in your plan
Rollover bank (C). If you don't use all monthly tokens, they go into a rollover bank storing up to 3 month’s worth of tokens, so you get the most out of your subscription. They are only used after all fast tokens are used. Learn more about Token Rollover.
Top-Up tokens (D). Fixed amounts of tokens that can be purchased at any time, so you can continue generating content after all fast tokens and rollover tokens have finished. Click Add Tokens to purchase top up tokens at any time. Learn more about how to purchase and use top-up tokens.
Unlimited generations (E) (if available on your plan). This lets you continue generating images even after you run out of all other tokens.
Note that My Plan at the top of the menu confirms the plan you are on.
Frequently Asked Questions
I’m a free user, what happens if I don’t use all my Tokens in a day?
As a free user you have a daily allowance of 150 Tokens. Tokens do not accumulate if they are unused, so if you don’t use them all then unfortunately they expire and do not carry over to the next day.
I’m a paying user, what happens if I don’t use all my Tokens in the month?
As a paying user, you have a monthly Token allowance per to your specific plan. At the end of the billing cycle, any unused balance accumulates in your Rollover Bank (up to 3 month’s worth of tokens), so you get the most value out of your subscription. Rollover bank tokens are only used once all fast tokens have been used. Learn more about Token Rollover here.
Can I buy Token packs / top-ups?
Yes! Paid users can now purchase any amount of small and large top-up tokens packs with an active subscription. Learn more about how to purchase and use top-up tokens.
Can I transfer or gift Tokens to another user?
No, we currently don't support giving or gifting tokens to another user.
I’ve used all my Tokens, how can I keep generating images and videos?
Free users
If you’re a Free user and you’ve used all your Tokens, you will have to wait for your next daily reset before you can keep generating images or videos. Hover your mouse over the token counter to view when your next token reset will happen.
If you’re a Free user and find yourself often needing more tokens, consider subscribing to one of our paid plans for many more tokens to play with, as well as access to premium models and features, the token rollover bank, and top-up token packs.
Paid users
If you’re a Paid user with no rollover bank balance and no top up tokens will get a free daily reset to 150 tokens at their next daily reset time. Alternatively, Paid users can purchase top up tokens to keep creating without interruption.
Premium plan users have access to Relaxed Generations for image generation only. Ultimate plan users have access to Relaxed Generations for image and video generations.
Unlimited Generations
Unlimited generations let you keep generating without tokens (excluding third-party models*), but with slower processing times, depending on how busy the platform is. They only activate once you have completely run out of tokens and cannot be manually enabled.
*Relaxed Generations cannot be used for third-party models and their variants, such as GPT-Image-1, GPT-Image-1.5, Flux.1 Kontext, Ideogram, Nano Banana, Nano Banana Pro, Kling 2.5 Turbo, Kling 2.1 Pro, Flux Kontext Max, FLUX.2 Pro, Seedream 4.0, Seedream 4.5, Sora 2, Sora 2 Pro, Veo 3 and Veo 3.1. You will need Tokens to use these models. Third-party models can be identified with a non-Leonardo.Ai logo next to their name in the model selection menu.
I'm a free user and my token reset did not happen at the expected time. What happened?
Free users have a daily allowance of 150 Tokens that resets every 24 hours. If you do not receive your Token allowance for more than 48 hours, please reach out to our support team via the chat function on the bottom right of the app.
I'm a user with a paid plan and my token reset did not happen at the expected time. What happened?
If you are a user with a paid plan, your token resets happen every month depending on when you started your plan. For example, if you started a paid subscription on
July 15, your tokens will reset regularly on the 15th of the month.
If you did not receive your Token allowance within the day of your subscription, please reach out to our support team via the chat function.
Can I manually activate relaxed rate generation?
No, relaxed rate generation is only activated automatically if/when you run out of Tokens on an Premium or Ultimate plan.
I’m a paying user, how can I get more Tokens if I run out?
Paid users can now purchase more tokens on an as-needed basis with Top-up Tokens. These tokens never expire, but require an active subscription to be utilised. Learn more.
Alternatively, consider upgrading your plan for access to more tokens each month. Learn more about how to upgrade your plan.
Note: Upgrading your plan does not change your current billing cycle, which means that it will not change the date of your monthly Token reset.
