Lumion tracks the hours each student attends against the hours they're expected to attend. Your job is to make sure the kiosk is running for your class, that the records for your session are accurate, and that the session gets verified so the hours become official and students are notified.
Where attendance lives
Area | Where |
Your attendance sessions | Instructor Dashboard → Attendance (sidebar) |
Attendance from a course | Course Scheduling instructor screens → "View Attendance" action |
The kiosk | Launched from one of your sessions; runs full-screen on a shared device |
Attendance only appears if the feature is enabled for your institution and your account is an instructor. Your list is automatically scoped to sessions where you are an attached instructor — you won't see other instructors' sessions.
1. Find your sessions
Open Attendance in the Instructor Dashboard. The list shows your sessions only:
Date & Time, Course & Session, Clock Hours
Attendance — click to open the live records for that session
Verified By — who verified it and when
Status badge — Upcoming, In Progress, or Completed (computed from the schedule vs. now)
Filters: Type (Regular / Make-Up), Status, Date range (defaults today → next 7 days).
Your only row action is View — open the session to manage it. Creating, editing, copying, and deleting sessions is an admin task. If a session is wrong or missing, ask your school admin.
2. Run the kiosk for your class
The kiosk is the full-screen device your students use to punch in/out with their PIN (and a photo, if your school requires it).
Open your session's View page and choose Launch Kiosk (or use Open Kiosk from the list).
Leave the kiosk open on the shared device for students to use. While it's active, the kiosk lock prevents anyone from navigating away.
Exit Kiosk when class is done — you'll be asked to enter your password (the user who launched it). It's rate-limited: 5 attempts, then a 30-second lockout. After exiting you're returned to your Attendance area.
Two kiosk modes:
Session mode — locks the kiosk to that one session. Students must already have a record on the session to punch in. Add attendees first (see below), or have the session linked to the course offering so the cohort is attached.
Institution mode — lets enrolled students punch any eligible session within a ~4-hour window. A student with no record yet is clocked in automatically.
Manual sessions: if a session's punch method is Manual, students can't use the kiosk — you record their attendance by hand in the records table.
3. Manage attendance records
From a session's View page (or the Attendance modal) you get the records table. One record = one student's attendance for that session.
Columns: Name (with photo thumbnail when photos are on), Status (Present = green, Excused = amber, Absent = red; blank = Pending), Time In, Time Out, Hours (computed), Notes.
Add students
Click Add Attendees — search and add contacts to create their records. The system reports how many were created or skipped.
Edit a single record
Click Time In or Time Out to set or update times. Use the Set to Session Start / Set to Session End buttons as shortcuts. Time In must be ≤ Time Out.
Use the Edit action to set Status, an optional Reason (for Excused), and times.
Remove deletes the record.
Bulk actions
Select multiple records and choose from Set Time In (Session Start / Now), Set Time Out (Session End / Now), Set Status (Present / Excused / Absent, + Reason for Excused), Add Note, or Remove. Each bulk action previews which records will change vs. skip (and why) before you confirm.
Auto clock-out by session type
Type | Hours counted | Student clocks out? |
Basic | Scheduled start → scheduled end | No — automatic at end |
Partial Trust | Student clock-in → scheduled end | No — automatic at end |
Zero Trust | Student clock-in → student clock-out | Yes — they must clock out |
For Zero Trust sessions, remind students to clock out at the kiosk before they leave — otherwise their hours stay open.
Photos and history
Photos — shows a student's captured punch photos for the session (photo verification).
Attendance History — shows that student's records across all other sessions.
4. Verify the session
When the records are accurate, click Verify from the session View page header. Verifying locks the record times (verified Time In/Time Out become read-only — use Unverify to correct, then re-verify) and notifies students (if your school enabled Session Recorded Notifications, each student with a record gets a one-time notification confirming status, times, and hours).
Don't skip verification — a session that isn't verified doesn't send student notifications and isn't officially signed off.
What you can't do (admin tasks)
Change institution-wide attendance settings (attendance type, PIN format, photo policy, punch methods, notification toggles).
Create, edit, copy, or delete sessions from the list.
Set a brand-new PIN value for a student or manage photo consent — that's done from the student's contact Attendance tab by an admin, or by the student at first-time kiosk setup / in their Student Portal.
If you need any of these, contact your school admin.
Troubleshooting
Situation | What to do |
A student isn't on the kiosk in session mode | Add them via Add Attendees, or have the session linked to the course offering |
Student can't punch — "manual attendance" message | The session is Manual; record their time in the records table by hand |
Wrong times after class | Edit the record or use Set Time In / Set Time Out (single or bulk) |
Student forgot to clock out (Zero Trust) | Set their Time Out manually before verifying |
Need to change a verified time | Unverify, correct it, then Verify again |
Session missing or has wrong schedule/type | Ask your school admin — instructors can't create/edit sessions |
Can't exit the kiosk | Enter the password of the user who launched it; wait out the lockout after 5 failed tries |
