Connect your school's Facebook Pages and Instagram accounts to Lumion. Once connected, direct messages open as conversations in the Inbox beside text and email, lead-ad submissions come in as labeled contacts, and you can let an AI agent answer DMs automatically.
Who: Admins with Integrations access · Where: Settings › Integrations & API › Social media accounts
Before you connect
Two things must be true first: your Instagram account must be a professional account attached to a Facebook Page, and a personal Facebook profile can never be connected on its own — it only grants access to the Pages it manages, so whoever runs the connection needs the right Page access.
The integration also stays off until Lumion switches it on for your school. If you don't see Social media accounts under Integrations & API, contact Lumion to have it enabled.
Connect your accounts
Go to Settings › Integrations & API. There are two tabs under the heading — Webhooks and Social media accounts — and you want the second.
The page shows a card for Facebook and a card for Instagram, each with its own Lead Ads and DMs rows so you can see exactly what is live. Click Connect Facebook or Connect Instagram to start.
Sign in to Facebook as the Page admin. If your browser is signed in to a different Facebook account, Facebook stops with a Switching accounts prompt and won't continue until you're on the account that administers the Page. Switch first — it's the most common place this gets stuck.
Meta then asks which business assets to share. You pick, in order:
• Business portfolio — your school's portfolio, not a personal one
• Page — the Facebook Page your Instagram account is attached to
• Instagram Account — accounts from other portfolios are listed too, so check you're picking the one tied to that Page
• Ad Account — optional, and only needed for Lead Ads
Meta shows a Review what you'll share screen listing the Business, Facebook page and Instagram Account you chose, along with everything Lumion will be able to do. Click Confirm, wait for the connection, then Finish to come back to Lumion.
Confirm the accounts Meta hands back
You aren't finished at Finish. Back in Lumion a banner reads "Meta returned 2 assets. Review and confirm they look right before Lead Ads and DMs go live" — nothing is switched on until you say so.
Click Review returned Pages. The Confirm the returned Instagram assets dialog lists every account Meta sent back, each showing the Facebook Page it came through — for example Instagram business account · via Facebook Page "…".
Read the Page name in each row before you confirm. Meta often hands back more than one account, including ones attached to Pages you didn't mean to connect. If the list looks wrong, close the dialog and reconnect — you can choose a different business on Meta's authorization screen.
When the list is right, click Confirm and connect. The card flips to Connected, and Lead Ads and DMs go Active once their Meta subscriptions are ready.
How DMs work in the Inbox
When someone messages your Page or Instagram account, a contact and a conversation appear in the Inbox under new Facebook and Instagram tabs. Expect these contacts to look thin — they're social-only, usually with no email or phone number, just the person's profile name (and sometimes not even that, because Meta doesn't always share it). Drawing a phone number or email out of the conversation is part of the work.
Replies are text only, so a brochure or photo still has to go by text or email. Someone messaging your Page is the consent to reply; there's no other opt-in. Staff can record an opt-out on the contact, but Meta offers no STOP keyword, so that opt-out only holds until that person messages again.
The 24-hour reply window
Meta only lets you reply within 24 hours of the person's last message. The composer carries a live countdown ("24-hour reply window · 23h 13m left"). Once it lapses, the composer is replaced by Reply window closed, and you have to wait for that person to write again before you can respond.
Any social DM still inside its window and waiting on a reply gets a red "!" badge in the inbox list, so the front desk can clear those first — which makes same-day coverage, weekends included, worth planning for. You can only reply to people who message you first; starting a brand-new thread isn't possible (that's Meta's rule).
Lead-ad submissions arrive as contacts
When someone fills in an instant form on a Facebook or Instagram ad, their answers come into Lumion as a contact labeled Lead, Facebook Lead or Instagram Lead, plus "Lead form:" followed by the form's name — so you can tell at a glance which form brought a person in. Someone already in Lumion is matched and enriched rather than duplicated. Leads from countries your school hasn't allowed are held aside rather than dropped.
Let an AI agent answer DMs
Every connected Page has its own AI settings, opened from the gear on that Page's row, where you pick one of your published AI agents and turn on automatic replies to incoming DMs. It's off by default and set separately for each Page — automatic on Instagram while Facebook stays staff-only is a valid setup.
This is the answer to the after-hours half of the 24-hour clock: a 9pm DM gets a real answer at 9pm. There are no quiet hours, so a school that would rather not reply at 3am should leave it off for that Page. AI replies draw on your school's AI credits; anything staff type by hand is free.
When a connection breaks
If Meta access is later removed or a Page is unassigned, that connection shows Needs attention with a Reconnect button, and Lumion emails your school's admins and owners rather than waiting for someone to notice the leads stopped. A nightly check flags genuinely broken connections and clears the flag once access is fine again.
The Reconnect button on each card runs the same Meta flow described above, including the confirmation step at the end.
See social alongside your other channels
The Lead Capture page adds four source cards — Facebook Lead Ads, Instagram Lead Ads, Facebook DMs and Instagram DMs — each with its own lead count, and the same four appear in the Source filter and trends chart, so you can compare what each channel produces over time.
