Magma Paper

Print assignments for students to complete on paper, then upload the completed work back into Magma. Student responses are automatically graded, attached to the original assignment, and included alongside digital submissions.

Why use Magma Paper?

Magma Paper is a great option for classrooms that:

  • Want to reduce student screen time.

  • Don't have 1:1 student devices.

  • Support students who work better on paper.

  • Need flexibility for district or classroom assessments.

How it works

Print the assignment

Open your assignment and print copies for the students who will complete it on paper.

Collect and scan student work

After students finish the assignment, scan their completed work into a single PDF. You can use a scanner, copier, or a phone scanning app.

Upload the PDF

Open the assignment in Magma and select Upload PDF.

Wait for processing

Magma will process the uploaded PDF, automatically identify each student's work, grade their responses, and attach the results to the assignment. Processing may take a few minutes, depending on the size of the upload.

View the results

Once processing is complete, paper submissions appear in the assignment just like digital submissions. You'll be able to:

  • View each student's work.

  • See automatically graded responses.

  • Review results alongside digital submissions.

  • Use assignment data as you normally would.

Can I upload photos instead of a PDF?
Not yet. At this time, Magma Paper supports PDF uploads only.

Can I upload multiple students in one file?
Yes! Upload a single PDF containing all student work from the printed assignment.

How long does processing take?
Most uploads finish within a few minutes, though larger PDFs may take a little longer.

Coming Soon

We're continuing to improve Magma Paper with even more flexible upload options, including:

  • Upload by email

  • Image uploads

  • Drag-and-drop file uploads
