Fast food fulfillment: create and fulfill orders in two steps from one iPad

Create and fulfill orders in two steps from the same iPad — no separate packing station required. Enable "Allow new orders from shifts with cash drawer" in App Settings.

Want to use the fast food fulfillment model with fewer iPads? You can now create and fulfill orders from the same iPad in two separate steps — no need for a dedicated packing station.

Create orders with a status of "New" from a normal shift at POS, then come back to the same station to fulfill them later. Using a separate iPad for an order packing station is optional.

How it works

With this feature enabled, your POS station defaults to creating orders with New status instead of immediately fulfilling them. This lets you separate order creation from checkout — the same workflow as a fast food counter:

  1. Step 1 — Create the order. Ring up the customer at POS. The order saves with "New" status.

  2. Step 2 — Pack the order (optional). Use "Scan to Pack" in the iPad Packing tool, or mark it packed manually in Admin.

  3. Step 3 — Fulfill the order. Select the new or packed order at POS — the status toggle automatically switches to "Fulfilled" — and complete checkout with payment.

How to enable

  1. On the iPad, go to App Settings

  2. Toggle on "Allow new orders from shifts with cash drawer"

That's it. The POS station now defaults to creating orders with "New" status.

Using the order status toggle

Once enabled, an order status toggle appears in the bottom right corner of POS.

  • When creating a new order, the toggle defaults to "New"

  • When you bring up an existing new or packed order (from the Orders list, or by scanning a packing slip or receipt), the toggle automatically switches to "Fulfilled" so you can complete checkout

Example workflow

  1. Customer walks up. Create the order at POS — it saves as New.

  2. Staff packs the order using the iPad Packing tool (scan the packing slip) or marks it packed in Admin.

  3. Customer comes back to pick up. Pull up the order at POS (select from Orders list or scan the receipt). The toggle switches to Fulfilled. Collect payment and check out.

Important notes

  • This feature requires a normal shift with a cash drawer — it won't work on shifts without a drawer

  • Activating this setting changes the POS default behavior — all new orders will be created as "New" instead of immediately fulfilled

  • A separate packing iPad is optional — you can pack orders from Admin or skip the packing step entirely

Common questions

Do I need a separate iPad for packing?

No. Packing is optional. You can mark orders packed in Admin, use the iPad Packing tool on a separate device, or go straight from New to Fulfilled at the same POS station.

Can I switch back to the normal fulfillment flow?

Yes. Toggle off "Allow new orders from shifts with cash drawer" in App Settings. POS goes back to fulfilling orders immediately on checkout.

Where is the order status toggle?

Bottom right corner of the POS screen. It only appears when this feature is enabled.

What happens if I scan a packing slip or receipt at POS?

POS pulls up the order and automatically sets the toggle to "Fulfilled" so you can complete checkout and record payment.
